I think that's a lovely idea. Engagement rings for men are very rare, but actually seem to be a growing trend of late. You could consider one of those. But there are plenty of other options, too.

If he doesn't like wristwatches, you might consider a nice pocket watch. You could even have it engraved with his initials and your wedding date, or a romantic quote.

Or if jewelry just isn't his thing at all, you could get him a first edition of a book that means a lot to him, a desk clock, a really top-notch pen set, even a set of golf clubs, if that's what he'd love.

The idea is to get something sentimental that he can keep and/or use for a long time to come.

I'm sure you'll think of something that will mean a lot to him. And I'm sure this sort of thoughtfulness will bring you both joy in a long marriage.

Get him something fun that he will enjoy, bonus points if it's something you can enjoy together. There really isn't a traditional gift that every man gets as a token of engagement (not like the diamond solitaire that the jewelry business has sold us women on). In my family, the guys didn't get a gift until the night before the wedding. I gave my husband a silk handkerchief to wear with his tux. He handed it back to me during the ceremony to dry my tears of joy. It was a very simple, yet special gift to us both.

Congratulations!

If you can't think of something material to give him, take him somewhere he'd love, like a concert, a hot air balloon ride, a museum, or anywhere he's always wanted to go but never got around to. Or treat him to a special dinner and a massage- either from you or a professional one!

Depending on his line of work and personality here are some ideas:
Engraved money clip
Engraved business card holder
Accessories for his car (stereo, rims, etc.)
Something for in the bedroom ;-)
Chain necklace (some guys like that)
Personalized bath robe
Cuff links to wear on the big day
Tickets to his favorite sport, concert, etc.
I'm sure he's love anything.
Congratulations!

I gave my fiance a beautiful gold men's ring with my birthstone in it (Garnet). He loves it...and loves the symbolism of wearing my birthstone on his hand, while I wear the engagement ring he gave me on my hand.

does it have to be an item? instead of getting him something, you could make him a GREAT dinner (if you love cooking or what not). or you could take him on an awesome date, dinner, his favorite guy flick, walk on the beach. :)

i would ask him if he wanted an engagement ring, some guys would rather not wear one.

My husband has worn a ring since we were promised! He loved wearing one. We both had promise rings, and have worn rings together ever since. It really just depends on the guy I guess...

Aside from what they USUALLY get (sorry!), a silver ring.
A band with something inscribed would be like a pre ring for him... affordable, touching and it wouldn't embarrass him!
My X (cheating).. (demon) wife gave me a silver band with "peace and love" scribed in it. I loved it. Till I HACKED it up and sent it back to her with a note that said, "SWalloW THIS!".
:].... best of luck for a life time of happiness.. :] !! UGGG!
