I'm in the market for a new dvd player. I just want it to play movies. So what's the difference between a $30 dvd player and a $200 player?

Hmm, not much really, a decent DVD player will cost between $40 to $70, just has long as it has a progressive scan feature you should be fine, and only some TV's support progressive scan through component cables, if your TV doesn't support progressive scan then just get the cheapest DVD player out there with somewhat good reliability. The more expensive up converting DVD players that claim to convert 480p to 720 or even 1080i don't bother, the difference is so minor the normal person probably wouldn't even be able to tell. If you have a HDTV and can afford to buy Blu Ray or HDDVD i suggest u do so otherwise just get he best deal on a decent progressive scan DVD player.

Hi .Contrary to what other people might say DVD Players do have differences in picture and sound quality. And it is not necessarily the more expensive ones that are better. If you are having your Receiver do the digital to analogue conversion are your Receiver's DACs up to the job ?Your DVD Players might do a better job.The first DVD Player i had was a Pioneer.A few years later i upgraded to a NAD and the picture and sound quality were both vastly improved. You only have to listen to a CD Player that uses valves instead of solid state and the sound is warm sweet and not a hint of harshness.Weight has a lot to do with DVD quality A heavy machine is more stable and the transport mechanism is less likely to foul up.

the cheap ones SUUUUUUCK!!!!!!!!! theyre so frustrating, cause they overheat, so about an hour into every movie you watch, it starts glitching. the picture freezes, becomes distorted, and then gos back to normal. and then it happens again, and again, and again like every 5 seconds, and if you can sit through that torture long enough then itll shut uff and restart. its SO lame. best thing to do is buy a playstation 2. cause theyre dvd players, and when first released retailed for 300 bucks. but now you can get a new one for like 120. and some would say "yea but it doesnt have a remote" well screw them cause u can buy a remote attatchment for like 10 bucks. go for the ps2, they work great.
or if u want a blueray player get the ps3, cause it works for that, and its cheaper then a blueray player

Panasonic is a much better brand for quality and reliability. I have own a first generation player from Panasonic for over 4 years and played over 300 blu ray disc movies without having one problem. There blu ray disc player is also one being recommend by Home Theater Magazine. Keep in mind you get what you pay for. Hope this will help you out.

I have a cheapo one I bought 3 years ago when I moved and it still works just fine for me. The more expensive ones probably have features you wont need.
