Rain water is *soft* water.
Out in the country, people used to drink well water or spring water, because it was mineralized and tasted good, but their downspouts would fill a cistern. The cistern water was better for cleaning, including bathing and washing one's hair.
Hard water leaves your hair dull. Soap and shampoo won't suds right; it curdles, instead.
If you have soft water already, there's little reason to use rain water. However, water softeners don't remove sulfur and iron from hard water, only calcium and magnesium. If you think the dull color of rust is cosmetically appealing, or you want your hair damaged by sulfuric acid, you may decide that softened hard water is acceptable, rather than using rain water.

Rain Water is WONDERFULL for hair (for ALL of you- in fact!). It even FEELS "different" immediately after it falls... The NEXT time there's a heavy thunderstorm in your area- run outside RIGHT AFTER the rain stops- & walk in a puddle with your bare feet. You will SWEAR the water feels more "alive" somehow! It's great stuff! -For People- as WELL AS gardens & everything else... :)
