I've heard from some of you that you can't pick and choose which parts of the Bible to believe, unless it actually says so, like a parable for example.
Matthew 4:8 says, “Once again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their glory.”
If you reckon Genesis is the literal truth, do you also think the earth is flat? It doesn't actually state that the earth is flat, true, but the above would only be possible if it was. Perhaps Satan used magic to display the whole world. Why then go moutaineering?
Isiah 11:12 also seems to think that it is square, or at least some kind of quadrilateral. "And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth."
Are there mistakes in the Bible, which was written some time ago by people with a lesser understanding of the world than ourselves? Or is the world really flat? Your call.

Ray: Interesting answer, but as the question states, if they were using their powers to see the whole world, why would they bother with climbing a mountain? Also, while North and South poles are real enough, East and West poles are an entirely human construct dating from well over a thousand years after the Bible was written.

Jim Pettis: Yes, it's a figure of speech - because it was in the Bible first and people quote the Bible. Just as the phrase 'to look daggers' at someone is a figure of speech because it was in Shakespeare first and people quote Shakespeare.
It's strange the way you people make assumptions about my non-Internet life, and assume I am out to tear your religion down simply because I point out inconsistencies. Maybe you want to take a look at yourselves.

well considering god created the world i think he would know that it's not flat.
However since it was awhile after that when we discovered that the earth is round, so i doubt the prophets knew. And when he says "four corners of the earth" I believe that was not gods quote.
And no I don't believe in evolution because 1. god said he created man! 2. Because the belief we evolved from apes is rather insulting.

The fatal error of evolution is found in the assumption that the understanding of today is greater then the understanding of yesterday. Knowledge and understanding never walk hand in hand. God also can withhold one from the other so that crafty men walk in darkness.
Having said that, let us consider a problem which God must seem to share with many Christians. How can Jesus, on his visible return as some expect to see it, be seen by all if the earth is not flat? I have heard the answer is television! The TV idea ought to scare any reasonable man, maybe overjoy others, when realizing how easy people are to manipulate.
What is not understood by many, even Christians, is that the world spoken of here is the internal reality of men. The word 'world' is not always limited to this context; much in the same way that faith and belief are not always synonyms.
Billy's gin joint and pool room, and a big Roman Catholic cathedral, are projections of the spiritual world; neither called forth by God. Even with a flat earth; the devil's view, imagined by most, is not possible for the human eye.
But there is a spiritual eye and view point from which these kingdoms are visible. Do not mistake seeing the 'world' for a geographic tour. Just two of the kingdoms of this world are the kingdoms of fashion and religion. What kind of physical height will view such kingdoms?
Even without revelation, one should know that having seen one gin joint you have seen them all. Even if many are built by many people; uptown or downtown they all issue from the same spirit. The same spirit calls the business, issues the permits, collects the taxes, and writes the TV sitcom that strokes the human psyche with a false sense of meaning.
If you want a real time project, somewhat similar to the world view of the temptation; consider Psalm 83. It names all the mid-east players in the spiritual realms (kingdoms). If you can read it and see it; you will probably know more about the situation then any human living at this moment; outside of the actual perpetrators.
The city four-square is another matter; but again deals with a dimension within a dimension.
The earth is round but world dimensions actually have rooms and states and conditions. All this does not even consider the three Scriptural heavens, the three hells and the ten and maybe twelve convoluted dimensions which mathematicians are seeking to prove in this plane.
You cannot pick and choose when it comes to Scripture; but it must agree and one must have some revelation regarding what one is reading. The Bible is more a living organism then a text book.

I find it really odd that you suggest that those who don't believe in the theory of evolution *do* believe in the (proven false) theory of a flat earth. Clearly, the most likely to believe in a flat earth are those who believe in evolution, since both are scientific theories generally presumed true by people of their time.
"It doesn't actually state that the earth is flat, true, but the above would only be possible if it was" - not true. *I* can see "all the kingdoms of the earth" from the comfort of my apartment. It's called television. The bible makes no claim that they rose to a height at which all the kingdoms of the earth could be seen, but rather that the devil *showed* him all the kingdoms of the earth - an entirely different thing.
Isaiah - we *still* use the term "the four corners of the earth". There is nothing about this which presumes that the earth is flat - rather, it is a figure of speech. Another we still use is "the ends of the earth". Clearly, people who use this phrase do not imply that the earth is any particular shape.
You mentioned mistakes - would you mind mentioning at least one? Or are you referring to the glaring mistakes in your logic?

First of all all Bible believers are not evolution deniers. We are aware of the theories about creation. I don't think that earth is flat because our minds are not able to undestand because God's view of earth is not flat because he's the creator of all things. Mountaineering has nothing to do with earth being a certain shape. There is information in the bible with an understanding we can't understand ourselves because of our viewpoints. I believe that the world isn't flat because of gravity and all of the other planets in the solar system are ball shape form and are not flat.

the world's round.
if the devil is a counterfeit artist, and God can make visions occur, then logically the devil would try to do the same. Jesus on a mountain would be able to see all the world. if there are spirits there, it is a spiritual experience. this doesn't mean the world is flat. you'll notice no claim that the world is flat is given. you'll see "as surely as you can't perceive how a baby was born [and they couldn't" or "as surely as the Lord lives [which He does]" but you'll never see "as surely as the world is flat".
if you want to get technical, the world does have four defining points. 0,0; 0,180; 180,0; 180,180. four corners.

There are no mistakes in the Bible and a good majority of Christians are intelligent enough to know that the world is round. There are no scriptures in the Bible any place that states that the world is flat. Get your facts straight and do some research before putting down idiotic statements.

Just because you're frustrated that you can't prove that you're right doesn't mean you should get angry at atheists....... who by the way use their brains and don't believe in everything they're told........... the bible is just a book and like any other book was written by man and men make mistakes........ therefore you shouldn't follow it blindly i mean you have brains for a reason....learn to question....learn to be open minded.......and finally learn to use your brains

We don't know which mountain the devil took Jesus to or how clear the day was so we don't know how far he saw. As for Isiah you have to remember that his know world was not as large as ours, probably Rome, Greece, Egypt, Turkey and Persia and the surrounding areas.

I am sorry, but if you go to a high mountain...you don't see a vast expanse?
I realize that feeble minded atheists choose to try and deny the Bible, but you really need to go out and try and help humanity instead of trying to insult the intelligence of anyone who believes in religion.
