In a society of teenagers and slang-talking yappers, I don't know what's acceptable any more. Do people look at you like you've got five heads if you order a pot of tea on a hot day in a café? Do they just sell it for those "uncool" people who "need to avail of the life"?

My most recent afternoon tea was attended by several young women under the age of 25. Does this make me cool?

Well, if that's why they stock it, I hope they keep it up! Sometimes there is nothing that will do except a pot of tea.

And I like it made with actual tea leaves, too, if I can possible get it, rather than with a tea bag.

I have noticed a new interest in tea, with shops like T2T opening, which stock a huge range of hundreds of types of tea and tea blends, some very exotic. They also carry lovely china, especially very cute teapots.

Like everything, if there is a niche market someone will rush to supply it ... but good for them.

In the meantime, I will continue to order my pot of tea at the cafe, thereby revealing my age and my profound uncoolness. And I will enjoy it :-)

Cheers :-)

Heavens, tea has not gone out of style, there is an ice cream store in San Francisco that sells tea flavored icecream.
Kids of today are not taught about tea and it's healthy, restorative, medicinal value, all they know is soda pop. They are not taught about the tea ritual, or it's place in history, or today's society.. They are not taught how to make it.
And tea drinking is a cultural thing. Some British do not approve of ice tea. An American Southern tradition is "sweet tea" and I am beginning to see that on menus here in the midwest. This area abounds with "tea rooms" sometimes that means a traditional British tea time is available, sometimes it just means they serve lunch and tea is available, and the decor is designed to attract the "ladies who lunch" crowd.
In my area it is popular to have a tea party, white gloves and hat mandatory, and it is taught in manners classes.
And I love it! Hot or cold, orange pekoe or black, flavored, sugared, or plain. Out of mug, or a fancy bone china teacup. As toddy, or as diuretic, or to soothe a sore throat or upset tummy. Warm fluids warm the digestive tract thus bringing extra blood to the area, , and help us digest, and to heal. It helps clear sinus passages, with its warmth and steam..
Thank goodness for the traders who went to the far east and brought back tea. It used to be very expensive, but now we can purchace a box of teabags for pennies on the bag.
In my area, it is on every menu, and I see it on the diners tables, young and old, way more often than I see soda.
So, have a cuppa, deary. You are not out of style.

Actually, I think tea is coming back. A lot of bakeries are doing either high teas or a "hip," updated versions of high tea. Places like Teavana are opening up. I can't think of many places that aren't Asian restaurants where I would think to order tea since I know it would just be bagged.
It occurs to me that you might be British, but in the States we are rethinking our stance of "tea goes in the harbor."

I see tea ordered very often, both in the USA and of course in Asia. And Americans love iced tea.

I love tea! We have a store dedicated to tea called T2. It's a very swish store and the tea combinations are fantastic.

i drink tea, i use handkerchiefs, i do meditation... and people think that i'm really cool.. i guess drinking tea and all the old fashioned stuff you must mean are just really "uncool" to those who don't really know what they're talking about or to those who pick on those who have class.

Of course drinking tea is acceptable. I have had many people offer me tea. I don't drink tea but I have joined many people for tea.

Tea is certainly acceptable. I've heard that on hot days, hot liquids quench thrist better than cool drinks on hot days.

Enjoy your tea now because once I finish training my army of ninja mice and I take over the world tea will be banned.
