With Teresa continuing to be.... well.... 'difficult'... What about Gibbs buying the rights to the #3 from RCR?

I agree that the number should not be used, but eventually you are get someone in NASCAR that wants the number. Childress can only lease the number so long before NASCAR will take it back. I believe that if anyone should drive that number is should be JR even though I would rather see no one in it. Would you rather see some no name take it? Not me Beside that dont you think it would just make the wicked step-mother sooooo mad?

Well seeing as how the car owners really do not "own" the numbers, only Nascar does, however Nascar is really lax about who has what number. In regards to Richard Childress ever giving up the number 3, I would have to say over his dead body.

As far as Teresa continuing to be difficult (and thats putting it mildly) and not working with Hendrick to allow Dale Jr to take the number 8 with him, I say it is what it is. There is nothing saying that she ever had to give up the number, I do not know if she is thinking people are going to stay loyal to the number 8 without Dale Jr driving that car or what, personally I believe that she is being very short sighted right now and not thinking about the long term.

Childress contracts the number from Nascar every 2 to 3 years.
An earlier answer said that someone must drive a car with that number or it goes up for grabs, that is not true. The team that previously owns the number has the option to sign a new contract for that number with Nascar after the contract runs out.

NASCAR leases the numbers to the teams. Who says Teresa is being difficult? The eight may be part of the sponsorship (recognition). Dale Jr will NEVER be a Dale Sr, he knows that and says so.

The three should never be given out again. If any number should be retired, it's the King's #43.

well, they may not have to. If a number is not being used for a certain amount of time it is up for grabs. Childress does not own that number. It very well could work out for Jr's favor to get that number if he wants it. Childress wanted to retire the number "3" after Dale Sr's death, but was informed by NASCAR that if the number was not used it would be back up for grabs. I however do not believe that anyone has used it out of respect. The question is would Jr be disrespecting his fathers memory or is he destined for that number. Although Jr has a strong following I believe he would meet alot of oppisition to taking that number.

Childress won't be giving up the rights to that number any time soon. Do you have any idea how much money it's bringing in to RCR? Earnhardt's been dead for over six years and his merchandise is still sells better than almost everybody. I agree that he should continue to lease it in order to keep others from being able to run it, but if he really had the noblest intentions, he wouldn't continue to use it for profit.

Richard will never sell his best friends number no matter what.
That would not be cool.
Richards number and he made the comment that the only way we would see that number back on the track is if an Earnhardt is driving the car.
And that is OK with me. I will wait for the day.

The #3 should never be taken out of retirement as far as I am concerned. Neither should the # 43 of Richard Petty.

Yeah, that would be dumd. The should retire the ol' number 3, and nobody should ever be able to drive in NNCS.

Yeah, but remember, Junior said he didn't want to run the 3, he said maybe later...
There was one person posted that Nascar owned the 3, what I understood, Childers does in Fact own 3. Nascar owns the 8, not 3. Am I not right?
