She's moving to the East Coast to go to school out there for a year. I'm friends with her mom and don't really know anything about her or what she likes. Is it proper to take a gift or is the party simply to say, "good luck"??

If a gift is in line, what is ideal for her?

I think a journal,or a diary would be a nice gift, some nice colored paper Nice colored pens, envelopes and some stamps and put it all in a box and wrap it up.Since she will be going away she can write letters to her friend and family would be a great gift.

As you don't know the girl well, you could simply attend to say farewell, but a small gift is certainly acceptable at a party of this kind.

A pretty photo album, journal for her thoughts to be written in or diary to record her exepriences would be nice gifts ~ avoid anything too 'personal' as you don't know her plans.

Best wishes :-)

A cash gift wouldn't be out of line here, as she would want spending money when she gets there. Also a nice journal or a stationary set that she can write to her friends with would be a nice gift.

I live in California but am originally from the east coast. It can get very cold esp at night depending on where she is going. Perhaps a nice pair of gloves would do the trick. Or a small fleece blanket. they are inexpensive and it will be somehing she can use.

If you guys have been friends for a long time, try making something sentimental. Like getting a piece of construction paper, and then putting a picture of you and her together. Get cut outs from magazines of things that you talked about before, inside jokes, that kind of stuff. :) Good Luck!

Give her a Bible and a dictionary. The dictionary is to look up words in the Bible she doesn't know the meanings to. She'll learn more from these two books then she'll learn in the school she is going to.

Get her a sweatshirt from one of the local colleges (or a local attraction or business) as a reminder of home.

I would get her a disposable camera or two so she can take pics of her "new" school, home etc. Then she can email them to you so you guys can stay in touch.
