I like Maryn's answer. I was thinking more skeptically, that they want to make sure you're one of the "beautiful people," but that doesn't make sense if it's someone you know throwing it.
Have fun!

You do not have to invite everyone's children, even if they're adults. You DO need to invite people's spouses, however. You cannot just invite your uncle and make your aunt stay at home. You not need to let people bring a date if they are single. If they are married, engaged, or in a serious relationship, however, you must invite their spouse/fiance(e)/boyfriend or girlfriend. You can't separate a couple. If your in-laws can only afford to pay for 125 people, then you and your fiance can cover the rest. If your own parents are asking you to invite more people than you can afford, say something like, "We'd be happy to do that, but we can only afford to invite 125 people. If you want to invite anyone else, the cost is $x per person. If you can pay for them, then we will gladly invite them." Either find a way to trim the guest list to 125 without excluding spouses, or find a bigger venue.

Were you invited by a friend for a private party?
If so, is it possible that the friend might be planning to present a photo collage of some sort? I've seen at weddings, for instance, wedding pictures of the guests on display.

uhm that sounds really .. not normal.. the only two reasons i can think of is:
1. They want to know what you look like so they can know you are who you say you are (for security, etc.)
2. They want to know what you look like because they make a big deal about good looking people at their party...
either one doesn't sound good enough.. but thats all i can think of.. if i were you i would call or email or something and ask what the pic deal is all about..

Because it's at a nightclub and not someone's home, they may have club security, aka bouncers, admitting guests and turning others away. They'll only know you are who you say you are with the photo.
Seems tacky to me, but at least that reasoning makes sense. Better would be the host at the door to welcome you, and the bouncer taking care of strangers.

I could take the inviatation and give it to an underage person and let them go in my name. It is a security thing, no more and no less. with all the lawsuits going around today, I'm sure you can appreciate their caution. good luck and have fun.

I think it's really a white slavery ring and the photo is for prospective bidders.
Either that or the host is way too full of himself, and full of Sh-t. Either way, you'd have more fun somewhere less pretentious
