A color vision problem is not disqualifying. But, assignment to electronic fields where all the wires are different colors and positions of that sort are out of range for a color blind person.

First off, i don't know how many boats the AF has, but I have only been in for 8 years. And I don't think we use Army regulations for anything involving our personnel.
As far as I know, cops, maintainence, special forces, pilots, intel, and certain civil engineering jobs (electrician mainly) require color vision. Admin, finance, fuels, other CE jobs (construction, roads, heavy equipment, etc), comm, and supply do not require color vision. But, just pop your head into a recruiter and ask.
Also, 40K personnel are being cut this year, so keep in mind the standards are getting tougher at this time, but in four years when we start tring to rebuild after the Clintonesque screw over of the military, they may be relaxed. Also, to be a pilot, he would need to go to college and get a bachelors, so we are talking 8 yrs until he would come in anyways.

Can't do it. You need to have good color perception. It's still four years away...
