I was on a Virginia interstate driving home, the same interstate for 4 years now. I got pulled over for APPARENTLY driving in an "HOV" lane (high occupancy vehicle lane, you must have two or more people in the car to travel in the HOV lane). OK, get this.....I WASN"T driving in the HOV lane! The HOV lane is the most left lane on the interstate and clearly marked with double lines. I was driving in the right lane (slow normal lane). The cop told me that ALL lanes on the interstate are HOV lanes, yes ALL 4 LANES! But this major interstate (Interstate 66) has at least 4 lanes and the left one is the only one that has the sign on it and is marked with double white broken lines. I have been driving like this for years, hundreds and hundreds of cars are on this interstate with only one person (driver) in the car. What is going on here? I have never in my life heard of this....ALL lanes on interstate are HOV lanes! How does one go home? Did this cop give me an illegal ticket? What do I do?

I would go to court and tell the judge just what you just said here!! Some police think they can do whatever because they have a badge. They are human too. And they think they are above the law, it is so many dirty cops out here, and then they wonder why they are getting shot at. Now don't get me wrong there are a lot of Good police and I don't condone shooting at the police but they have to treat people fairly!!

An "illegal ticket"? No. When you go to see the judge, plead "not guilty". Your case will then be set for trial. Chances are the cop won't show up to present the State's side of the case. If that happens you're off the hook. If he does show up, let him explain how all 4 lanes of the freeway are HOV lanes. In the meantime, go take pictures of the area where you were ticketed. Make sure you get the pavement markings, signs, etc. If there's an overpass nearby, use that as your vantage point. By all means, be careful while taking pictures on the road.

Are you sure that was a REAL officer. This story makes ZERO sense. IF ALL the lanes were HOV lanes, NONE would be marked as such. The ENTRANCE ramp would be marked. Either you are lying or whoever gave you the ticket is.

yes he gave you an illegal ticket !!! but they will never admit it,so if I was you I would just pay the ticket, rather than have to go to court and pay the ticket.I was in an similar situation and I asked the state trooper why did you single me out,His reply was !!!have you ever been fishing.my reply was yes!!! then he ask did you catch them all? altho most cops are fair at ticketing motorist, you have others who like to make up the rules as they go,sad thing is they get by with it ..
