The two things you should never talk about in public are religion and politics.

One of my evangelical relatives was completely blown away by this. Didn't even get where the logic was coming from.

I agree. Youll never win on either side. When alls said and done, Republicans vote for Republicans (Same applies to democrats, green party, etc). No point arguing. Youll never win.
And people are the same way about religion. Christians stay Christian. Atheists stay atheists. No one ever wins. The blind remain blind, the ignorant close minded remain ignorant.

The saying as I heard it was that there were three things not to talk about in public, sex, politics and religion. It all depends how you take it.

The spirit of the saying is that you should not be careless and foolish and talk about things that might offend, divide or embarrass others, but be tactful and thoughtful in what you say in front of other people.

On the other hand, there are situations when these subjects need to be broached and discusses in an open and constructive manner.

As for religion, it determines not only how we live our lives now, but how we will spend eternity. It is very important to find opportunities to discuss religion and explain the urgency in the gospel. However this needs to be done in a sensitive and constructive way, not in an offensive or tactless manner.

I'm sure others will have different points of view, but I hope this helps some.

The reason people say this is because arguing over these two subjects is never going to get you anywhere.

For instance, if I say there is no real evidence of the existance of god, the believer will say yes, there is, and hand me a bible.

We both leave the room thinking the other is too stupid to understand the truth.

Fun, isn't it?!?!?!?

Its because it causes so much contention. Sure we should be able to talk religion or politics without rancor and anger... but people get proud of their opinions and don't like their beliefs challenged, so they get mad. So instead of getting into a barfight with somebody, sometimes you have to shelve the subject and find something more agreeable to discuss.

The spirit of contention is of the devil.

personally I think you have little back-bone if you're afraid to talk about religion and politics in public. of course, I'm not all for going up to a total stranger and saying "Obama's great! go converts!" either.

Hey Taxicab,

i think it's a foolish saying.

People should be able to talk about any topic. There are obvious times when it is appropriate and inappropriate but these are obviously important topics that people should have the freedom to share their thoughts and experiences on.

Kindly,

Nickster

Technoman is right. Most of the time, it only stirs up bad feelings and animosity.

I wish liberals would follow that advice.
They never seem to shut up at work.
