Family Room

'Hold my hand'
She whispers, and I grab
Her delicate fingers, as if the grip
Could stop her falling
Into a deep dark hole.
Then she let's go:
Wheeled smoothly
Almost soundless.

I'll be honest.
It's me who is scared
Left numb. In the family room.
A room full of blank stares.
Forced smiles.
Of families.
All of us certain, of course, the child in us
Will come back.

Fumbling through a magazine.
Deciding when to slip out
For a cigarette.
Or something to eat.
Certain. Convinced.

Wondering.
If the child in us
Will come back.

I've been there, 3 times in the past two months, being around some family that goes to church then some that just party no matter what age they have become, the others doing some of it all don't know how to act because they are too busy trying to see where they fit in at. Then you have those, with their nose's up in the air with their fancy cars, good jobs, and a ex that pays well in child support so they put on their fake *** smiles to just be bousey. Oh yeah, I have been there and still go there everytime someone in the family dies. Now imagine this, I just bought my first house, and I am having a housewarming party, lets see if this family gets together and not make themselves look, WHAT! NERVOUS! If you are there, snap back to reality and remember it's not you, it's them!

No, I dont worry about these things because I am a great big kid - Im 24, self employee / part time employed & live with my boyfriend but we still do exactly what we want to do. I still laugh at everything I find funny, I still waste time on things that have no real purpose except fun.
I refuse to become something expected of me and I dont act up on purpose to prove a point so I cant say Ive been there although I can empathise with the family visit situation - I have a conservative christian family and Im a fun loving atheist so we have real trouble connecting in these situations. Luckily for me, my boyfriend is everything I need.
:o)

I love the poem.
I think you are trying to express how you wish being around your family was like it was when you were a child. Carefree, innocent, not concerned with how they percieve you or how you perceive them.
I've felt the same thing, all the cousins, brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles, everyone has grown apart, started different lives. They are not the people you played with in the front yard or on the swing set at Grandma's house. Still family, but no longer friends.

Once you lose your childhood, it will never come back. You're an adult now...time to move forward. Stop trying to live in the past.
