I'm probably going to be criticized for my answer, but I don't care. wouldn't have a dog if it had to live outside. I live in southeast Florida, and the weather, especially in the summer is brutal. My dog is only outside to pee, poop or play and get some exercise.

As so many others have mentioned, dogs are pack animals and love being around people and being part of the family. Outside dogs, in time, become ignored and become nothing more than a yard decoration. They crave what little attention they get when someone comes out feed and water them.

can't understand why people say that they keep their dog outside so that the dog can guard the house. What is in the yard that is so important that they are afraid it might be stolen? Lawn furniture, a grill? Any of things can be replaced. Anything of value is kept INSIDE my house and not outside.

On another note, I once a saw a show on 20/20, or one of those news programs where burglars were interviewed, and they said that they avoided breaking into houses where the dog lived inside. They also said that's it easy to break into a house with a alarm system as they know the tricks of how to by-pass those things.

I apologize for the long answer, but sometimes I get carried away :-)

Housedogs live much better lives, they are healthier since sick dogs are noticed inside, they are better trained, better groomed, get much more attention and do not develop thunder shyness as often as outside dogs. I have 7 dogs, all insdie dogs who go out to potty and play but all prefer to be inside sogo outside then ask to come back in. My neighbors got a dog who lives outside and now about 3 yrs later is lucky to be played with once a week. She is BORED and barks and digs. They never walk her or take her to the dogpark that is 5 minutes away. What quality of life does she have?

I would not want an animal if my intention was to leave it outside. Outside is to play and go to the bathroom. My dogs actually go to the bathroom around the corner from where they play so they don't mess up when they play.
Dogs like companions and they are just 4 legged fuzzy people.

at least if he's in the house, u don't have to worry about him being hit by a car. My dog was always in the house unless she was outside with me.
she lived to b 13 and never got hit by a car or anything else

Why wouldn tit be? Dogs are pack animals and should always be allowed in the house. Only exception is working dogs who are made to guard livestock, then the goats/sheep/chickens are their pack and then they shouldnt be in the house very often if ever.

Yes, whats the point of having a dog if you dont let it in the house ever. Well it's not good to leave them in the house all the time, but you shouldnt leave them out all the time either...

Yes, dogs are social animals and do well in a household setting. They also benefit from the climate controlled environment.

Sure, they are pack animals. People are there pack when we keep them as pets.

Exceptions would be herding and working dogs. They generally stay with the herd they are protecting.

well.. it's up to you and your parents.... Here, the plus side is that they keep you company, and they're really fun to play with! The minuses, is that small dogs have a good chance to run away, (just like my dog) and there's hair EVERYWHERE in the house!! That's why my dog is usually outside a lot!! lol
