I was told I could just use a good adhesive since I am laying the tile on a new subfloor. Then just grout between the tiles. I don't want to take a shortcut if it costs quality.

If th subfloor is concrete you can but it has to be thinset. not adhesive.

You shouldn't lay anything straight on a subfloor unless you are talking about luon. If you laid ceramic tile straight on your subfloor, if you ever had to take it off you would end up having to replace your subfloor again.

Ceramic tile should be laid on duroc/cement baord and stuck down with thin set.

They are not that expensive so I wouldn't reccomend cutting corners to save a lot of money. It can be many times more expensive to re do it and do it right than it would be to buy some duroc and thinset.

Adhesive is the correct method. Begin at the center of the room and work towards the walls. Spread adhesive outwards in small areas that can be easily reached. Use the correct trowel.
(I hope you are not thinking of putting adhesive "on each tile" and setting each one) NO, NO!

Grouting is correct.
BE SURE to use spacers between the tiles. If spacers did not come with them, go to a flooring store, or Lowes/Home Depot. They are made of plastic in several dimensions depending on tile size, all the same size to maintain even spacing.
Not expensive but necessary.

Grout can be used along walls.

This is done after the tiles are fully set and dry. You'll need sponges.
