Manhattan is very, very expensive and gentrification is occuring across the entire city. You might want to consider living in one of the outer boroughs. I would not recommend Staten Island because it is physically inconvenient from the city. You have to take either the ferry or enter Manhattan via Brooklyn or NJ if you live on SI. However, parts of Queens and Brooklyn are nice and provide easy access to the city if that's where you need to be. Also, the Bronx is a possibility but the better areas are in the Northern part of the borough which can make commuting long. Parts of NJ are nice like Hoboken and certain sections of Jersey City. They are easily accessible to Manhattan. BTW, what constitutes affordable to you? A 1 bedroom apt. probably starts at 1100-1200 in the outer boroughs.

There really are not any affordable areas in Manhattan anymore. Unfortunatly it is just getting over built with high rise apartments and they are all getting more and more expensive. According to the NYTimes all they are building are luxury buildings for both rental and for sales. Even areas like Hells Kitchen which was an area where you used to be able to get walk up apartments for reasonable apartments has been gentrified, and is no longer a "slum". You are better off looking in some parts of Brooklyn, possibly Bay Ridge, where you can still get into the city and it's still safe, or trying parts of Long Island City, or possibly New Jersey. It all depends on if you want a car or not.
Staten Island isn't that bad, but as far as I know it seems to be mostly a lot of married couples. Also, you wouldn't be able to live near the ferry, so you would need a car to live our there. You would be able to get space, which you wouldn't get in the other boros. Best to come to NY and take a look at the areas and see where you feel most comfortable.

If you were choosing between Brooklyn and the Bronx for nice areas I would go with Brooklyn. The Bronx is ok but has a higher crime rate then Brooklyn. If you are willing to get out of the city a little bit but still be near Long Island is also great.

If you really have your heart set on Manhattan, the only moderately reasonable areas are northern manhattan neighborhoods of Inwood (where i live) and Washington Heights. Harlem is affordable, but not for long as its being rapidly gentrified.

If living uptown by me, the nicer properties are west of Broadway. You will find cheaper stuff east of bway, but the farther east you go (which means the closer you get to South Bronx), the dingier and more ghetto it starts to get.

So its really upto you, do you want affordability or convience?

I am a Staten Island native, it is a nice borough. The beaches, Midland Beach and South Beach have been transformed into nice desinations. People have houses with yards. There are excellent restaurants and delis. Public transportation is good there with the Staten Island Railroad and the ferry.

Staten Island's about 15 minutes on the ferry to Manhattan. It's not such a good neighborhood near the ferry, but if you move further in there are some real good sections :D

You might want to try the boroughs like Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens, the Bronx- They're not TOO bad of a commute, and the difference between rent in, say, Brooklyn and rent in Manhattan is literally thousands of dollars per year!

Or you could relocate to Jersey and just drive up to NYC on weekends. (It's like a 2-hour drive).

You went to 5th Avenue and Central Park? Grrr I am so jealous.... New York is where I always wanted to go. Luckily, I have been accepted into the Beta Club and we are taking a highlight trip to NYC!!! We will be seeing most of the places listed above.

By the way, you can just google search cheap New York apartments.
