Today I blocked my first person. I just couldn't help it. I recieved the most horrible and ugly email that I have yet recieved, so I blocked the sender.

Does blocking that person make me a bad person?

And, what drives you to block other users?

You've done nothing wrong. Even if you had it would have no bearing on you as a person.

I feel pretty bad cos I've just delivered my first thumbs-down. It was to the person who said you are too tolerant. Is there any such thing?

I've blocked a few in the past, but only the ones I feel are a threat to my security as an Answers user.

There is one action that I would never stoop so low to do, though, and that's reporting.

I feel that it is an important part of the Answers system that we uphold the freedom of speech. We should be able to put out whatever message we like, so long as we keep to the guidelines. Bear in mind that they are guidelines and not rules.

Reporting negates that completely, in most cases. I liken it to shooting someone from behind a curtain. Nobody can identify you, but you can kill somebody's account.

I depend on this email address as my main one for the past 4 years. If my account was closed as a result of some jumped up, over-ambitious, bounty hunter wannabe on heroin hitting the report button, I would probably not be very impressed.

But if I knew who it was (and I do know who most of them are, and I AM able to shut them down with their own methods), I would not return the unkindness, because it would not solve my problem.

I fight hate with love.
I fight prejudice with compassion.
I fight stupidity with astuteness (I DO answer trolls, and remove their teeth)
I fight war with peace
I use words where weapons may fail
I use hugs where words may fail
And where hugs fail, I have no business being

May peace go with you throughout your life

Not at all, you had every reason to block the user. And besides, a person is never bad no matter what they do. Perhaps they just make wrong decisions.

What drives you to block other users? It's not like a drive, it's something you sometimes need to do for either your safety, comfort, or whatever the need is. It's not bad at all for you to block users, as long as it's for a reason I guess. Even then, it's not a big deal at all.

What good does it do to allow abuse. You are not a door mat.
Some people take pleasure in hurting others with their words and you can allow that or you don't have to. That is what the block is for. Sounds like you feel guilty and guilt is a tool of Satan to tear you down. It is like watching TV. You don't like what is being presented to you then turn the channel. This is why they give us a block and virus protection so the evil of the world does not have it's way. I'm sure you are Loving and Kind but there is a limit to allowing evil to run rampant.
God bless you sister. Go in Peace.

No, the ability to reason is part of being a person and the ability to know "when to say no" is a part of that. Sort of like taking drogs, if a person constantly wants you to take them, you don't, and they know it, you are not a bad person if you stop hanging out with them.

It is the person who sends horrible and ugly emails that is the bad person. I would block someone who delights in sending emails which they know will offend. I would not block someone who disagrees with me as long as they do it in a respectful manner. The ability to choose is a right given to us and we must exercise that right.

It doesn't make you a bad person at all for blocking someone. I have blocked many people before because they either send me hate letters or nasty letters. Don't feel bad at all. You should be blaming the other person. But, if he/she did it once then I don't think you should block them. If it continues more than once than I think you should absolutely block the person with no question at all.

No.

I only block people if I think they'll scan my Q&As to do a mass report. I've blocked the handful of people who've blocked me. There are only about eight or nine in total. Periodically I check back and it turns out the people I've blocked have had their accounts deleted anyway. Vicious hate mail is a good enough reason to block someone.

I don't do the e-mail thing on here. I use this forum for questions and answers, sort of like an old-fashioned discussion board, and IMO, you can say everything you want to say and get the other person's input without going to private e-mail. That way you don't have to worry about getting crank e-mails that you have to block. Another thing is that I get enough e-mails the way it is - I don't have time to read all of the ones I already get.

I have almost 200 blocked. I like to think it makes me bad. But I'm afraid not bad enough to be more than mediocre on the overall scheme of things.

I block people for a lot of reasons ranging from being merely nuisances, to being potential stalker/reporters.

No. It makes you a discerning person. Not everyone is worthy of additional time and attention once one has made peaceful efforts toward them. (See Matthew 10:11-14) I will block users for this basic reason.

No it doesn't. If someone is talking to you in a way you don't like, you have that right. You don't have to put up with it. I have blocked a lot of people online over the past ten years I have been online.
