If they were not, the attempt would be to bring in false doctrine. The epistles and gospels do not contradict, so if they forged the documents, it was for no good reason but to reinforce the doctrine.
There WERE forgeries going around. Paul addresses these, and even 2nd Thessalonians was written to refute one. But again, you can tell by the consistent teaching and doctrine.

Oh, and BTW. It's the Word of God. The writers were merely taking it down on parchment.

Mostly because they signed their names on the letters they wrote (most of the books of the New Testament are letters) then through history, those who shared the letters with others verified who wrote them, down to this very day where it is my honor to verify them to you.

Its the same way you know Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa, Michelangelo painted the ceiling in the Sistine Chapel and Abraham Lincoln was president of the United States. The art world has a word for it: Provenance.

Only the epistles authorship can be certified, since they were contemporary accounts. Authorship of the four gospels remains in doubt. But, it doesn't matter because I take what is written in there as a whole and don't parse it into some big mystery. I t's a very simple message conveyed by all four:
1. You are loved.
2. You are forgiven.
3. You are saved.

In some of the books the writer declares himself. In others facts from other books, or facts within the books indicate who the writer probably was. But the fact is we don't know who wrote each book of the bible, just that all scripture is inspired.

Though some of them MAY have been based on earlier documents the NT Gospels we have now are written in the 2nd Century though it is thought one or 2 may be a little earlier. Don't trust the answers here. If you read from a wide range of peer reviewed sources- even if they are Christian researchers, you will see that I am telling you the truth.

well, we don't.
modern textual criticism has shown that it very unlikely that some books were written by the attribed authors, particularely the epistles.
basically, even though many do agree that there are authorship issues, it should not suprise you that christian apologetics feel that liberal and agnostic scholars have hijiacked the debate and thus the point is moot.

Because the Bible was written by man and inspired by God and if those who wrote them say they did...THEN THEY DID. That's good enough for me.
