ok - so i'd love to hear your thoughts - it's a novelty gift - you don't really own a star, so, is it a bad gift, or a thoughtful fun gift? if you recieverd one what would you think?

been thinking about an unique gift for my nephew/godson's baptism. wanted somethign unusual - other than a bible or something that others will get -

so, what are you r thoughts on naming a star - silly, or fun and unique?

I think they're really cool. Depending on where you get it, you get a neat little chart showing you where it is, and a paper explaining the history/definition behind the constellation it's in. I think they're neat, and in a few years, when he understands better, he probably will to. I can see it now-a little boy, going to school, bragging about how his auntie bought him his very own star, then pointing it out to all his friends.

I named a star for my Godson as a thank you for being the ring bearer in my wedding. I found a cute stuffed star to accompany the certificate, and I chose a star in a constellation that would be easy to find (Orion) so that if he couldn't find his particular star, a least he'd be in the general area.

He LOVED it. He was about 3 at the time, and now he is 9 and he still talks about his very own star. Every year for his birthday, I give him something space related. He loves it.

I think it's a wonderful gift. The sentiment is what counts. You could give him some sort of traditional gift like a Bible or a cross for the wall, but I personally think that the star is much more creative and fun. And I think he'll appreciate it someday! (Probably more so than the Bible or the cross!)

The star thing is really stupid. The "registry" isn't really official, and as such, they could register the star coordinates to lots and lots of people and you couldn't really prove anything. Why not have a tree planted in Isreal? That's at least tangible...and who knows, maybe as a grown man he may be able to visit the holy land some day and find it!

There are lots of good ideas if you take time to think about it...and maybe you can do something that actually benefits someone too.

I think that it's a very cute idea! Every time your nephew looks up into the sky, for years to come, he will see the star named for him.

Great idea!

We did this for a relative who has everything and is very hard to buy for. The concept received many compliments and is often mentioned, even though it has been a few years now.

First you would have to discover a new star to be allowed to offically name it.
