Well, I have finally received my return after sending them a bunch of crap. My question now is will I have to do it again next year or is my record clean?

Who knows with the IRS, your proof for the previous year should be good enough for them, but I won't bet my CPA license on it. You might have to prove it again, and again, and etc. But at least you know what documents you need.

Keep all your records. If for some reason you have to show proof of any thing next year. Make sure that what ever caused the refund not to be released, does happen again next year. IRS hold refunds when something looks suspicious. AND WE HAVE TO THANK THE THOUSAND OF PEOPLE WHO FILE FRAUD RETURNS. They make it hard on people who are hard working and making their money to survive, living a honest life.

Hard to tell. If someone else like your ex claims them next year also, you might well be asked again to prove that they lived with you. At least, having done it once, you'll know what records to keep and to gather.

If nobody else tries to claim them next year, then your return would not likely be questioned.

Good luck.

they did not audit u, but ask for more information proving your deduction. there a small chance that they ask for the same documentation again, but I don't think so. The best think you can do is the papers ready for them. Your records was never touch
