I have never been able to figure out that one. It seems
kinda dumb to me. It's probably a psychological trick
to put people into competition
so they will play more.
Everyone wants to think they
are good at something.

In general, the points let you ask and answer more questions. The more points you have, the more questions you can ask & answer. Also, you can star more, comment more, and vote more. And once your past Level 1, you can start ranking http://answers.yahoo.com/info/scoring_system;_ylt=AtnBkHZsp0s1D8d88fEeGxo_zKIX

Also, sometimes they'll have things you can sign up for to get things for free. Like, a little while back they had a whole "help the environment" thing going on, and if you were Level 2 or higher, you could sign up and they sent you a free tote bag and light bulb (and then the more points you got, the more light bulbs you got). And quite awhile back, they gave out prizes (I think for Y!Answers anniversary), and the prizes varied according to your level. I was Level 2 at the time, I think (maybe 3), so I got a car magnet, but higher levels got T-shirts, hats, mugs, etc. So points are also useful in that way.

It is a reward system. It gives you something to work for ever so humble. It allows everyone to see your participation by who has the most points. Some give answers to help people and the points have no value except as a way for the narrator of this site to say thank you for participating. This would be my guess. Pretty clever, I would say! Maybe by helping others, your reward is treasure in Heaven. Maybe it is divine inspiration.

They sent out some freebies a while ago.
I got a nice ball cap.

What they're doing with the data is anyone's guess.

Some give you more freedom on the site. Beyond 5,000, it's just about bragging rights.

It's just an incentive to keep people asking and answering. It makes it more fun, even if you can't do anything with them.
