It cranks nicely and smells of gas. Tried checking connections.
My husband was wondering where the fuel filter is.
He is replacing the plugs which have less than 5000 miles on them, if I drive it more than 2000 miles a year it is a lot.
any suggestions

the two above me are good answers, but also recommend checking the fuel pressure regulator.. these are known for going out... basically pull the back cover, it's the round thing on the fuel rail... Pull the vaccum line and see if fuel comes shooting out.. if yes, I recommend to bring to mechanic shop to be replaced (It's a bear to replace) if no, try the ignition module as someone said

if the fuel pressure regulator goes, expect a oil change (as it dilutes the motor oil)

Definately sounds like a fule system problem. In answer to your 'where is the fule filter' question. Its under the vehicle, driver side, below seating area, front of fuel tank, mounted on chassis in fuel line.

The other thing to check is the fule injectors. They could be clogged or dirty, or possibly even the line is not connected correctly.

You might also want to consider the fule pump also, but this is less likely since you can smell the gas, which probably means the pump is pumping fule, and its escaping further down the line.

if you smell fuel your getting gas, i would start with the ignition system, cap, rotor wires and then the ignition module.......but before you do anything check for spark, and the fuel filter should be on the passenger side of the engine compartment or on the passenger side frame rail by the rear axle
