As a minister I can not say right now that I can recall a specific passage of scripture that speaks directly to smoking (no matter the substance). I will say that it is unhealthy and if there are others around the one who is smoking, that person is forcing them to breath what he/she is smoking. Some, like myself, are a bit allergic to tobacco smoke, so not only is the smoke harming the one who is smoking, but those who are around that person.

The Bible does say that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Ghost and that the Lord does not look kindly on the temple being defiled (this is a conglomeration of passages). Smoking also has it's roots in being rebellious. The Bible clearly states that rebellion is sin (1 Samuel 15:23, Jeremiah 5:22-25).

From what I have read of the Bible and from what I feel in the Spirit to be right, smoking is a sin. It is no worse a sin than any other sin and it is one that can be corrected. I have seen God fill people with the Holy Ghost and they went a threw away their cigarettes, or cigars, etc. and never touched them again. If God did not consider it a sin then why would He set someone free from the bondage of smoking? It is bondage, because it is an addiction. The Bible states in several places that Jesus came to set the captives free and to break the chains of bondage (Isaiah 61:1, Luke 4:18, Romans 8:13-15, Galatians 4:3-6, 2 Timothy 2:25-26)

I hope this helps answer the question. You asked for Scripture references and I gave you the ones I could think of off the top of my head.

the bible says our body is a temple and that anything that polutes God's temple is a sin. 1 cor. 3:16
Wether it is pot smoking or chewing bethal nut or licking a frog. Tobacco or alcoholic or drug additc
It isn't like if we tear this body up we get another one?
It is our permanent home. Our only one.
If someone bought you a house and you knew you could never afford another and it was beautiful. You threw harmful smoke in the air conditioner.
Plugged up the plumbing with things that you knew would ruin the pipes. Then the central computer that ran the whole house you clogged up with smoke. Until it could barely process information.
Would the person who bought the house for you think you showed very much appreciation?
Would he think you deserved a spirit body or anything else when you didn't appreciate the one he had already given you?
I think to do anything to the body God gave you to live in would be a sin, and a lack of appreciation for what he had already done for you.

Dear Larissa,

i am reminded that God looks at our heart. One thing about smoking is to examine your motive for smoking. While the Bible itself does not have any explicit verse that calls smoking a sin.

*Some will say that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit- and it is true that God does care about how we take care of our bodies.

*In the Bible drugs (pharmacologica) are like witchcraft, and so some people may consider tobacco a drug.

i think in examining those verses it is not completley clear-cut- but the Bible is very clear that not everything that is allowed is not necessarily beneficial for us. So i think i would think about why it is that you smoke. A lot of people smoke or take a drink to deal with stress, etc. and i think that might not be the way that God wants us to deal with stress, etc.

i know a lot of believers who smoked before they believed in God and are working hard to quit. It isn't because they are "obligated to," but because it gives people the wrong idea of Christianity. Could you imagine the posts on Yahoo Answers when someone who doesn't believe in God says hey- i went to church the other day and i was out in the lobby smoking with some other church members.

i have an old Sunday school student who calls me and asks me to pray with him whenever he is going away to a Bible camp because he is doing his best to refrain from smoking. And i can say that this student has a beautiful heart and really does want to please and serve God- and that's really great!!

Hope that helps. Kindly,

Nickster

If you smoke and cannot give it up it is because it is the product of evil, there is nothing good about smoking,it destroys our body ,because the lungs take in the oxygen that it takes to live and they should not be filled with black smoke with chemicals, so sad ,when people who smoke can't stop.
I heard in Jan of this year that the tobacco companies have all added 10%more nicotine to keep you hooked ,even the lights. HOW EVIL IS THAT . THE ONLY CONCLUSION I CAN COME TO IS THAT ONLY THE DEVIL IS CAPABLE OF THAT KIND OF EVIL.. they are constantly raising the price and have increased the nicotine levels and more poor than wealthy are smoking. I refuse to let Cigarettes be my God and I gave it up a long time ago.
People who say how much they love smoking are lying.they are weak and in denial or very suicidal.

I've looked in my concordance and neither smoking or tobacco are listed in it. But if you think farther, that smoking causes cancer and other health problems. So it could be considered a sin if you start someone else smoking if it causes their death or injury or if you take it up yourself it is possible that God may see that as killing yourself. And anyone that kills themselves are to go to hell.

It has to do with "your body is a temple"... if you are knowingly putting impurities into it, then that is a sin. I would suppose that is what a Christian would say. Personally, I don't see it so much as a sin , but it is ignorant to know all of the harm it does and to still do it. My father was dead at 69 from illnesses directly related to smoking. Good luck coming to terms with that question.

I think it is a sin I don't think you'll go to hell for it. The verse gos something like this "we are to present our bodies a holy and living sacrifice" also another one is that "we are not to conform to this world" you can look up those parts and find the verses. To me that says not to smoke because of cancer form cigarettes and also that is something that the world does.

it is a sin, I am sorry I can't quote the exact verse, but God tells us to love and respect our bodies. The bible says our bodies are our templesand we should take care of them. So anything that harms your health (over-drinking, smoking, drugs, etc) is disobeying that law and that is a sin. It may not be in the Ten Commandments, but its in the fine print of the Bible.
Have a great day

Smoking is not in the Bible, it's not a sin. But certain religious organizations discourage it because it is unhealthy and a dirty habit. It's going along with that scripture that says you should "be a clean vessel before God"
