if so, how do you feel about using them?

i'm not sure why you were all offended by this question. a little over sensitive, aren't you? does this question imply that i think you're stupid? and how do you think YOU made your fellow christians feel who don't know these origins? way to go.

It's not a secret and any educated Christian knows that and also knows Dec 25 is not Jesus' real birthday. Like the poster said, it's just about ancient culture and I never think about it. I'm sure Jesus doesn't either.

Since the Gregorian calendar is based on the Julian which was based on the ancient Roman calendar, it's quite logical that there would be remnants of the old Roman names. And again it's logical that the Romans would name the days of the weeks, etc, after their gods.

BTW, the names of many months are derived from their old numeric values.

Months and Derivations:

January: Janus
February: Februa (a cleansing ritual)
March: Mars
April: possibly Venus or Easter
May: Maia
June: Juno
July: Julius Ceasar
August: Cesar Augustus
September: 7th month
October: 8th month
November: 9th month
December: 10th month

In Portuguese, the days of the week are numbered except for Sunday (domingo = day of the Lord) and Saturday (sabado = Sabbath)

Yes, but you can't make them believe they are doing anything against their religion by naming the days of the week. They won't admit to doing anything wrong and just between you and me I can't see them renaming the days of the week to suit their religion.

Maybe change between the Christians and the non-Christians might make better progress by each side if maybe we cut them some slack. The old adage, "you can catch more flies with horse $hit, than vinegar." So why waste energy here showing up the Christians when there are so many better uses of the energy. We've got an election coming up. Have registered to vote or help others register? You know that voting against the Christian takeover of this government is more important than harrassing the Christians.

I don't mean to criticize, but weigh out the value of the energy. You cannot teach people anything that they don't want to learn.

I use a lot of things that I have no control over. The names of the days etc are some of them. I mean, what alternative is there? It's not a big issue for me.

Yes most of us probably do, but it doesn't matter, we converted Christmas and Easter and we're quite pleased with what we did there, but if you want I have some ideas:

Sunday could become Sonday (God's son)
An important day for us.
Thursday (was thors day right?) well that sounds different anyway.
And I have my own day: Friday - Fryday Hurrah!!

The planets get an easy yes. The months and days I may have to think about. (maybe even google it...) but it doesn't bother me using them :-)

Yes, we even learned to tie our shoes and dress ourselves. For crying out loud, we even know that the Christmas tree is a pagan symbol. But, all things "come from" God, and one of the coolest things about God is how He can use any symbol, pagan, Christian, or any other belief... for his purposes.

Yes, I do know and I reallly don't care. All the other Christians I know don't care either, they're just words.
