why is it if there is a god and the majority of the people on the planet believe in one in one form or another, the majority of those same people can't agree on who or what it is? chances are whatever god you believe in, the majority of the world does not believe in that god? does that not make it seem a little more likely that the god you believe in does not really exist?

Truth, in principle, cannot be arrived at by consensus. The majority of the world centuries ago believed the earth was flat, that the sun revolved around the earth, and that the weather was controlled by divine fiat. These beliefs are false, and almost no one to day, even the most superstitious and religious, believes in them. So consensus in no way indicates the truth of a proposition.

Furthermore, widespread disagreement on a subject doesn’t necessarily mean that the subject in question is nonexistent. After all, if diverging beliefs about something would lead us to conclude that such a thing were nonexistent or patently false, than many propositions in science would be considered invalid. There is widespread disagreement in the world of physics on the inner workings of quantum mechanics. These contradictory viewpoints do not invalidate quantum mechanics as a whole.

I think the best test we have to assess the truth of a proposition comes from basic logic. The question you have to ask yourself is this: Is your belief in X testable, internally consistent, not superfluous for the purposes of explaining a phenomenon, and not contradicting known facts? If X passes these basic four criteria than more than likely it is true. The fact is that people’s belief in God, regardless of the consensus, fails these four tests and therefore proves that his existence is highly improbable.

Think of it this way:

The majority of people do not believe in your god.

Cool, eh?

Damn, I only read half of your details before I spouted off. Same thing...

Sorry, I don't believe in God... I KNOW Him to exist, so I guess the rest are just wrong. Thanks for asking.
