I need tips for running a timed mile.

I need to do it for the upcoming soccer season.

I am running it on a 400m track, so 4 laps = 1 mile.

I'm asking for tips like sprinting the straightaways, first lap, last lap tricks. ANYTHING. please! it's on Saturday!

Thank you!

Run through the pain. Go fast at the beginning and middle. Remember youre going for a fast time. Since straights are easier to take faster, I would speedup on the straights, although it is preferable that you go the same speed on the curves as well.

Last lap: Go all out.
300m from finish: prepare yourself mentally for the sprint. This might involve slowing a bit just to clear your mind. Then start to speed up when you feel comfortable. But accept the fact that it is gonna hurt, and think about the great time you'll have.
200m left: you should have already started picking up speed by now, don't kill yourself too early though.
110-150 left: Somewhere in this stretch is probably where you should hit full sprint speed. It varies from person to person though. From here just run the rest as fast as possible, remember correct form, just try to keep from losing it and slowing down until youre past the line.

Breathing: This is important for a race like the mile. Breathe deeply, but not too deeply. Breathing regularly (maybe every 3 steps or so) will prevent cramping. Just try to take in as much oxygen and let out as much carbon dioxide as possible.

The best way to run a race is to run even. Try to set your pace and hold onto it. You can not expect to pick it up on the last lap or even the last half of the run. If you go out too fast you will tire and slow down. You can not sprint the straights and jog the curves. There are no tricks to running. Warm up and stretch before. Drink water so you do not get dehydrated during the run. You should be able to get into your pace as to what feels comfortable to you. Just do not go out too fast on the first lap. You will need to try harder each lap to maintain the same speed each lap.

there's three ways you can go, depending on your ability:
#1: keep a steady pace the first three laps and go your fastest the last lap. just think about how close you are.

#2: run the straight parts of the track=100 m each, and jog the curbs. don't go to slow at any time.

#3: run fast the first lap, and take it easy and set a pace, in between. the last 200m just sprint it in.

see which ones suit you best, and pick me as best answer.

i beg to differ with some responses. im a 800m/400m runner. i ran the mile in 4:14 in high school. always always run your hardest on the 3RD lap. thats where you can improve your time. it may hurt but thats the way to go. i would know. push push push the 3rd lap

The thing of it is, you just need to do it. Just run flat out as fast as you can. Practice running more than 1 mile to build up stamina.
Of course, if the event is the day after tomorrow, well, good luck.
