It was Jazz musicians who started to call NYC the big Apple. They were hanging out at jazz clubs on 52nd Street and talked about playing clubs in Chicago, St. Louis, New Orleans, when they talked about clubs in NYC, they called the city "The Big Apple" as a slang.
