I've always heard that you should drink 8 cups of water a day, because it's healthy, etc. etc., but I've never known why. To keep you hydrated, I know, but what are the other reasons?

A lot of people who are asking about losing weight quickly get told to drink plenty of water and I want to know what water has to do with losing weight?

And finally, the reason I'm asking this...I drank a full 8 cups [ok quite honestly, more. After adding a flavor packet, water's pretty good!] of water today. And the only difference I've noticed is that I've had to take many more restroom breaks.

Well, besides hydrating your body, water cleanses your kidneys, promotes regular bowel movements, helps your immune system fight diseases, and overall, it makes your body feel great.

The health recommendation to drink six to eight glasses of water a day is "thoroughly debunked nonsense," a doctor wrote this week in a commentary in the British Medical Journal. Some organizations backed by bottled-water makers -- such as Hydration for Health, created by the makers of Volvic and Evian -- say that it's important to drink 1.5 to 2 liters (about 6 to 8 cups) of water a day, and that being even mildly dehydrated plays a role in disease development, McCartney wrote. However, no such claims have ever been confirmed in studies, she said, and drinking too much water can actually be dangerous by causing low blood sodium levels (a condition called hyponatraemia) and exposing people to pollutants in the water.

If you ask me drinking that much water just puts a lot of strain on your kidney and your body. When you eat salad, fruit, tea, coffee.....they all have water inside of them so you stay hydrated. As for losing weight it just fills you and suppresses the appetite that's all. But all together drinking a lot water is not that healthy. 4-5 glasses and drinking it slowly seems healthier than gulping the whole glass down at once.

I drink a gallon a day usually. I add about 4 cups of green tea too. Drinking water is great for your body. As other people have already said, it detoxifies you, it makes you feel better and look better. Everything in your body needs water to function, so the more water, the better.

My aunt swears drinking a lot of water is the healthiest action to take. She claims it cleans out the toxins in the body.

Besides just "cleaning out the toxins" and it "just being healthy" water is also chemically essential for your cells to operate. You are made up of mostly water and without it you would NOT be able to survive. That's why you can go longer without food than without water.
