my daughter who is 3 years old has been prescribed flucloxacillin ( antibiotic) it is vile smelling and vile tasting, any good advice from mums and dads out there how to get her to take it would be greatly appreciated... she spat out the first spoonful and was nearly sick, i have tried disguising it in juice etc but to be honest with you i dont think anything could disguise the awful taste, i really need to get this down her somehow!!!!!!!!! by the way i have looked on the internet and read that there is a banana flavoured one but i cant understand why the doc didnt give her that????????

Hi Hun seems to me maybe your doctor has given you the wrong one, i mean your little one is only three my son who had a terrible infection had the banana flavoured one and he is nine ! so maybe you could call your GP and see if in fact he has given you the wrong one or it might be she has a different infection that does require that antibiotic, doesn't hurt to ask though ...good luck

I would call the doctors office and tell them that you gave the medican to your daughter but the smell and taste of it are so bad that she spits it out and seems like shes gonna be sick and if there's any way to get another flavor or some thing so that she will take it, its not doing any good if she wont take it. The pharmacist should have asked you if you wanted it flavored especially knowing it was for a young child. Good luck

I had the same problem when my daughter wasn't well when she was two. A friend of mine who is a nurse, said try disguising it in a jammy doughnut or something similar. I tried that and everything else other people had advised me. I resorted in taking my daughter back to see a nurse at our surgery, with the medicine and asked her to try to give it to my two year old. the nurse soon saw for herself the problem I was up against and had a word with the GP who decided to give her the banana flavoured antibiotic Amoxicillin which went down a treat.

It's amazing, my daughter even got her way with the doctor, LOL.

Good luck, and I hope your daughter is feeling better soon.

The doctors at the hospital threatened (not too unkindly) to my 6year old that if she didn't take it she would have to stay in hospital and have it through a tube.

I didn't know what all the fuss was about till i tasted it bit. Vile disgusting stuff, it doesn't matter what you drink or eat, it didn't take the taste away.
I would ask for banana flavour, you can't bribe a 3 year old to take it.

Oh definately call that pharmasist and ask fo the flavoring! some places charge a couple of dollars for it and it'll change the dosage but we ran into the same thing with my son when they gave us prilosec for infant GERD!
If they just won't do it then you're going to have to be the mean parent and explain to her that it is nasty and you're sorry but she HAS to swallow it! Have a glass of juice ready to kill the taste and if nothing else bribery gets you everywhere with a few m&m's to get it down.

When i have to give my son medicine, i use a syringe which i get from the chemist and then squeeze it in his mouth pointed towards his check. This seems to work, gives an exact measurement of the medicine. Good Luck

The pharmasist should've given your daughter that one for sure. I can't imagine any doctor or pharmasist giving my children something that horrible.

Call your doctor back and tell him what happened. maybe it was just a mistake. And see if he has a solution to what you can do. maybe he can prescribe another one (the banana flavored one) or maybe the pharmasist can just add the banana flavor to it withoutyou having to purchase another medicine

the best way to get foul smelling medicine into a toddler is by an oral syringe as it hits the back of the throat and they have no choice but to swallow, and cant spit it out. Spoons are useless, you can get oral syringes from the pharmacy and most will not charge you for it. Cant believe your doctor didnt give you one.

When your pharmacist filled the prescription, he probably didn't think to ask if it was for a child. Call your pharmacist, he can do a switch for you. Tell him you cannot get your child to take the medicine and see if he can get you the other flavor.
