The supermarket brands are just as good as the packaged ones from the big brand names. Realize that Mr Stop & Shop is not in the back room milking cows and making cheese from their milk. The Stop & Shop store buys in large volume form the big name diaries and puts their own packaging on it. It is a myth that store-brand = inferior.

The other thing to do is watch for sales in the super markets. As loss leaders they are often cutting the price on every brand of cheese (part of manufacturer's promotions) to get people into the store. Go into the store, buy their sale-priced cheese, and leave before you get hooked into buying anything that is overpriced.

Most supermarkets will carry their own brand of cheese, and they are less expensive than the national brands. Naturally the quality isn't as good, but it's decent enough. I get half a pound for $2.
