And if he didn't then what is he? Some kind of weird alien?

Great question. This is easily one of the most controversial statements in the entire Bible because so much "faith" revolves around the assumption that god created man in his own image. It's impossible to explain what it means and easy for people to use to explain their arguments.

Does this mean god has the profile of a murderer and rapist in his makeup?

The image of God refers to the immaterial part of man. It sets man apart from the animal world, fits him for the “dominion” God intended (Genesis 1:28), and enables him to commune with his Maker. It is a likeness mentally, morally, and socially.

Mentally, man was created as a rational, volitional agent—in other words, man can reason and man can choose. This is a reflection of God’s intellect and freedom. Any time someone invents a machine, writes a book, paints a landscape, enjoys a symphony, calculates a sum, or names a pet, he or she is proclaiming the fact that we are made in God’s image.

Morally, man was created in righteousness and perfect innocence, a reflection of God’s holiness. God saw all that He had made (mankind included) and called it “very good” (Genesis 1:31). Our conscience or “moral compass” is a vestige of that original state. Whenever someone writes a law, recoils from evil, praises good behavior, or feels guilty, he is confirming the fact that we are made in God’s own image.

Socially, man was created for fellowship. This reflects God's triune nature and His love. In Eden, man’s primary relationship was with God (Genesis 3:8 implies fellowship with God), and God made the first woman because “it is not good that the man should be alone” (Genesis 2:18). Every time someone marries a wife, makes a friend, hugs a child, or attends a church, he is demonstrating the fact that we are made in the likeness of God

Your statement is inaccurate. God created Adam and Eve in his own image. We are all offspring. At one time all of creation was perfect and that time will come again. God's character is flawless. Otherwise He would have created creatures incapable of sinning ... incapable of just about any independent thought.

OK.

He created people in His image, starting with Adam & Eve. Then the devil tempted them, and they ate from the Tree of Knowledge, and henceforth we have sin. Ultimately, we are created in His image, but we can also sin. Therefore, we have to repent to God and tell Him our sins so we can be healed and try to live more like Him. Noone is perfect, except for God and Jesus Christ.

The Bible also says that every good gift and perfect gift comes from above. So everything that is good in man resembles who God is, His image; sense of humor, compassion, the ability to love and to create life and to create things. The devil comes only to steal to kill and to destroy; everything evil in man comes from him, not God!!! He didn't have to let you wake up this morning able to breathe and talk! He didn't have to let your fingers type that silly question, think about that.

It doesn't say anything about his character. Period. Kind of hard to give everyone the kind of knowledge he has, don't you think?

Appearance has nothing to do with personality, and there is no correlated relationship between the two that can be explained, except in movies and theatre, because audiences tend to lack a sufficient number of brain cells to figure these things out on their own.

Imagine a perfectly pure pitcher of water.
So is it with man's once perfect soul and perfect relationship to God.
Now, what happens to that water when even the tiniest amount of ink is dropped inside?
This is what happened when man allowed sin into his life. One sin, corrupted him entirely and completely.

God created us in his image, yes but he also gave man free will. we choose to do right, or wrong. our actions do not say anything about Gods character. he is perfect in every way, and loves us so much. he loves us so much that he has given us numerous second chances to redeem ourselves, but we don't listen. we continue to do the same evil things.

You forget one important thing. Yes, God created us in His own image, but He also gave us free will to do right, or to do evil. He did this, because without free will, love cannot exist. It must be given freely, not coerced.
