OK, let's go one more idea..in 1993-1995 Chevrolet made a 3.4 liter V-6 for the Camero. Guess what??? It is a bored and stroked 2.8!!! Yes, it will bolt in and Chevrolet even offers the conversion parts!!
MUCH EASIER than adding fuel injection!!
Very popular conversion!!
Just wanted to expand the ideas.

Good Luck
For some reason this forum does not print the full address, so do a search for 2.8. to 3.4L engine swap.

The 84 Jeep was one of the last jeeps made by AMC. The 2.8 V6 is a 'mutt' engine. The engine uses a GM 2.8 block and I believe the ignition system is Fords. That said, it is a pretty rugged motor that would give you good pickup and decent mileage. However, it's not going to give you much more power than the four cylinder, I can speak from experience having owned one.

Personally, I like the 4 Cylinder and with the gas mileage it can return I would look at rebuilding it.

The 4.0 liter straight 6 is a great motor that will give you a lot of power but you may need to make more modifications than the jeep is worth.

Got with a small block V8 either a 350 from Chevy, 302 from Ford or a 360 from Dodge. If you go for a V6 either look at Buicks V6 or Chevys 4.3 the inline six is hard to beat and will last quite a while but a 4.2 Jeep might be an easier swap than a 4.0.
I like something that can deliver torque while I rock crawl and in my 88 Full Size Bronco I have a 351 Winsor. In a Nissan 720 I'm looking at I think a 4.3 would be great one thing that you need to keep in mind is power to weight and if you plan on crawling balance.

The transmission bell housing is your holdback. I think the 2.8L V6 and the 4 cly used the same drivetrain. But that V6 is junk. You will need to find this out. Now if you wanna get crazy change the engine trans and transfer case and have some fun.

straight 6. i have one in mine and i love it. i also had a v6 in it at one time and really hated it. i thought it was well under expected performance and the drive train was just crap. from experiance i'd go with the straight 6, they take a beating
