Its not required to "hold up" against anything. If someone doesn't want or can't afford to use Vista, then they won't use Vista. There are people who still use Windows 98 to this day. It's not a competition, unless you are trying to see which operating system maintains the most stragglers.

Windows XP will be supported until at least 2014, even longer if Service Pack 3 comes out. And people will continue to use it long after support ends. But 99% of people will inevitably switch to Vista.

I fear not for very long. Now that 2003 has passed away 2007 has taken over. But Vista is moving in at speed and new computer purchasers will be tempted to install it.
