Find some music that is based on chords and not much finger picking. Green day is really good for this. Then find "tabs" online. Tabs are music sheets that show finger position rather than music notes. They usually show six lines representing the six guitar strings, and then mutiple columns of numbers, or x's along the six lines representing how to hold your fingers on those strings. The number represents the fret along the neck of the guitar that you should hold your finger on. It really helps if you have a friend that can show you how they work too. Tabs can be found on the internet, but there tons at: www.e-tabs.org

Once you have the tab you want to try out, listen to the song on a stereo or computer and try to play along. Practice this until you develop the finger dexterity necessary to play the easy songs. Then try finding some that are a bit harder and work on them the same way. If there are things you can't learn on your own there are tons of people on the internet willing to help you out.

I'm teaching myself too...givin I play Piano so that gives me an advantage( But not much..Electric is still tricky.) As is the case with anyone already experiance musically.

Well, the most important lesson, is taking care of your guitar.

After that...You should first learn the names of the strings...be able to point at one randomly and say "G" or "e".

Second, the Major Scale. All other scales are based of this scale. Learn the patterns (chords) inside out. You can even make lead solos and songs of the major scale alone. Its VERY important.

Get some easy tabs. You have a song you want to jam to? Find the Easy Tab version.

Althought you may be frustrated in the beginning...if its a song you really like, it'll be worth it in the end, right?

Many sites have great tutorials and tips. Like About.com...and the others I saw that dude/chicca post.

Furthermore, (=P)The Minor, Blue Scales and Penatonic scales are the major ones used...consider learning them if you want to solo in different styles, ect.

^^Bai, and have fun.

As a self-taught guitarist myself, I can't emphasize enough that practice is at the utter core of learning the instrument. So if you don't have at least two hours a day initially to set aside to practice, you will not get good. There are instructional videos and sites where you can get great beginner tips for free. Just type in "learning guitar" in google; that'll get you started. Start with chords and scales.

If you have what it's popularly called "an ear for music" you'll be self-taught very quickly. But even if your not taking a bit of music lessons in school, solely buying a single guitar playing book will get you to a good start.

Hi, I'm just here to warn you that newyorkgal71 thinks she is better than everybody and often answers questions by calling the asker "Hon" which makes her seem more superior compared to everyone else.
