bobbo342 covered it pretty well with the exception of the transporting in a vehicle laws. The weapon has to be secured in a gun case or original box it came in. The ammo can be in the case or box with it as long as it is not in the weapon. The weapon or ammo do not have to be locked anywhere. These are state wide laws but remember, some local communities laws may very!

They really Suck... A person who owns firearms (18 w/ parents signature for rifles and 21 for all) needs to have a FOID (Firearm Owners Identification) Card. You need this to buy, sell, own or handle any firearm and ammo. 22 caliber and up. You can however go to a gun range with a FOID card holder and still shoot with that person.
IL is not a Conceal Carry State (CCL). You may transport firearms via vehicle as long as ammo is locked separate from firearms and the firearms are locked with breach open. A firearm may be carried on your person on personal property both home and office (as long as your boss approves of you doing that at work). If you rent, a landlord cannot ask to have your guns removed. Some cities have banded high-cap mags and others have banned guns altogether (Chicago). If I have not answered your question, please leave more detail or email me at this name @yahoo

Yes. My condolences to you for being interested in firearms living in Illinois.

Possibly the least gun-friendly state in the country. Maybe worse than California.

I mean no offense to the good reasonable people in either state, by the way. Unless you are an anti-gun politician or lobbyist, THEN I mean all the offense shown here plus a lot more.
