Limit the attendees to only family and close friends. Limit the venue. Have a casual atmosphere rather than a formal one. You can still wear your white dress and groom can still have a tux, but maybe a suit would be more in keeping. Don't have attendants or limit them only to MOH and BM. Make your own food or have family members do the catering. I'm doing my own catering as this is more of a family party than a formal wedding reception. All of the food will be ready in advance (appetizer/luncheon) and we just need to reheat. Having a wedding in your backyard is NOT necessarily cheaper. Our neighbor spent more fixing up his backyard for his son's wedding than it would have cost to have the wedding and reception at some other venue. On the plus side, at least they were able to enjoy the beautiful yard AFTER the wedding, whereas nothing would have been gained having it at the local VFW. If you want a formal wedding and lots of guests, off-season is your best bet. Do everything you can yourself though. The more you pay to be done by someone else, the more it will cost you. You have to decide what is most important to you. I'm buying my wedding cakes at either Costco or Sam's (just plain flowered cakes) and placing them on stands for a semi-tiered effect with a castle topper. That's $40 vs. $150 to 200 and we can reuse the topper on a birthday cake. I'm making my own wedding dress for $60 although you can find decent dresses under $150. We have no attendants and my guy is just wearing a suit, we are getting married during the off-season AND during the weekday. What IS costly is that I wanted a particular setting for my engagement ring, so I cut back on wedding costs to pay for that extra.

I got one free from the place we held our wedding. Have you decided on a place yet? Maybe they will give you one for free?

I wouldn't pay too much for one but then again, it may depend on how elaborate your wedding is going to be. Our wedding was probably middle of the road. We spent about $20K. The wedding planner we got free worked out well.

You may want to consider what your style of organizing is. I'm sure they are pretty much all of the same. Have you been to the wedding planning web sites like the Knot and Wedding Channel?

I have a cousin whose wedding cost $100K. I've been to wedding that cost under $10K.

Get a free one by registering at JCPenney. All you have to do is register for 10 or more items and visit the store to pick it up. It's a big binder with tabs and checklists.

I barely used the other two I received as engagement presents...but I did enjoy The Anti-Bride Wedding Planner...not bad, just different!

I bought the Emily Post wedding planner, and it is invaluable. It has every detail for the proper etiquette for any type of wedding, from casual to ultra-formal. It has great checklists and worksheets, too.

I am also planning my wedding myself, and it has great timelines with what should be done when.

It's a little big to carry around all the time, but I bought a little 6" x 4" notebook to keep in my purse to jot down ideas and keep samples of fabric and styles on hand.

I just got a 1inch binder. I found those wedding planning checklists were fine but you also need to keep track of all your contracts and written communications with vendors, payment reciepts, if you have any inspiration pictures, random notes....things like that. For me it was easier and cheaper to just get a regular day planner and my handy dandy binder and use the free online wedding checklists instead.

Look into Stephi Stewart's "Fire Your Wedding Planner" it's acutally free if you get the 30 day online e=book and she has free weekly email. She's been extremely helfpul for me becuase not only does she offer alternatives but teaches you how to spot scams and how to negotiate with vendors to get what you want.

go with a simple one...you don't need anything fancy
You want something to write down ideas, contact phone numbers/addresses, appointment dates things like that...you don't need one that is filled with ideas. Simple is better

The one I bought was basically a journal. I had 1 page for each of the wedding party (bride/groom/maids/best men) for sizes, colors, what they would be wearing. Page or two for flower ideas/cake ideas, and I included prices, phone numbers etc on those pages as well

Are you buying the planner as a keepsake? If not I would say don't waste your money.

There are plenty of online free wedding planning site such as www.weddingchannel.com and www.theknot.com, plus many more.

Just get your self a 3 ring binder and use MS Word and looseleaf paper and Voila! You've got your planner.

Good luck!

Buy the easiest one to read. The best ones list what things should be done at which month. Such as 12 months ahead: rent hall, find caterer, find clergy/lay person to marry you, order wedding gown, etc.

I have "A Personal Wedding Planner" by Sharon Carpen Cook. I love it and it has answered all my questions.
