How would you interpret the following Spanish expression?

"¡Hay que tener riñones!"

The context is a man whose grown son is about to be put to death.

Literally it means: "You have to have kidneys", but that does not make sense in English.
What it means in this context is: "One has to have a lot of courage and strength to live through something like this."

Sounds like the English phrase,
