We just pulled up some kind of tile in our bedroom that had a cardboard type underlayment and under that were thousands of nails nailed into the hardwood floors. Is that how people put down those tiles in the 70's or 80's? What can I do with the 1/4" holes that were left when we pulled the nails out? I can't beleive someone would ruin floors like that!

It might take a bit of elbow grease, but I would do this to keep the hardwood floors:
Remove all the nails. Buy a good quality wood filler close to the color of the wood. Fill the holes, let that dry and lightly sand to make a smooth surface. Watch for the wood filler to crack or crumble. If it does, remove the filler and re-apply. If you are going to refinish the floors, sand any other spots, blending into the existing wood. Prepare floors for re-surfacing as directed on the chosen products for your type of floor finish.
Anything you can do to preserve the floor will be well worth the effort.
Good luck. Do research and get help if you need it.

I can't believe anyone would ruin floors like that either. I would recommend paying a visit to your local home improvement store, like Home Depot or Lowes. Talk to the people in the flooring department and get their take on the situation. There may be some kind of wood filler you can fill those holes with.

One possible way would be to fill them with wood putty and buy some wood scratch repair markers and try to mask the holes. Another would be to fill the holes with wood putty and completely refinish the floor. However, it sounds like you have so many holes that you would need to sand down the floors a good 1/4 inch to reduce the size of the holes first.

Get a qualified contractor to look at them. They can in some cases, seal the holes with a filler, sand the floors and stain. Make sure the filler will blend with the wood color or stain color. That way it doesn't stand out. Good Luck!

Basically, you can either fill each individual hole with a wood filler, then sand and restain the floors or replace them. Sucks that someone lazy would ruin good flooring like that.

You could try to fill the holes with wood putty. They sell it in a variety of colors at the hardware store. However, if it was thousands, as you said, you may have to replace the floors. Putty can only do so much.

Sorry....That's a real bummer.
