Because He wanted to make it clear from the beginning that He came for EVERYONE. Fishermen, prostitutes...tax collectors...everyone who was shunned by polite society and particularly the pharisees.

Matthew was a tax collector and Luke was a physician. Some were fishermen. He looked for people rightly disposed with a good heart condition instead of choosing people who were simply looked up to by society.

to stop religion from being exclusive. Later on in life more high up ppl followed him such as some Roman centurians but a lot of Romans took it as a threat and in the end he was crucified for being "against Ceasar" even though he had actually told ppl not to cause Caesaer unneccesary trouble!!

Simple is the KEY word here. Simplistic is "like a child", which is also His teaching. Any one can follw Him, just get rid of all the "ideas" about God, which are all man-made concept, and experience the Life. God and His Son are Life. Be Still and Know I Am God. In stilness of mind we experience the depths of the Presence of the Life. Give it all away and follow Him.

simple people speak simply and connect to more people and thats the way the message would have travelled all the way up to the academics
the academics probably wouldn t have listened as they thought too much of themselves like the scholars in the synagogue who he criticised and argued with

I think our Lord wanted to pick the common person to be his apostles to show that any of us can be prophets for Him and spread His word. I think showing that those who have sinned and broken God's law could be welcomed back to a full life with Him is also a reason and why someone like Paul was chosen.

He called all sorts to follow. If you remember he called a rich man to follow, but the rich man refused to become poor for the sake of Christ, so he declined. Into this world naked you came and naked you will go out. Why would you turn down God for anything.

God, in the Old Testament, constantly used simple, uneducated, seemingly worthless people to show up the wise and educated. He LIKES to use people whom soceity thinks of as unimportant.

Poor, uneducated, gullible. It's kind of like how McDonalds advertises it's food to the poorest people because educated people who can afford better food know how unhealthy McyD's is.
Or maybe Jesus was just a firm believer in Romanticism. You know, the beauty of the struggle of the lower classes.
It kind of reminds me of how George W is always talking about waht a "regular guy" he is. Larry the cable guy and Jeff Foxworthy do it too for that matter.
Selling yourself is always about appealing the the lowest common denominator.

He wanted men that were grounded in reality and not spoiled, selfish people. People that could endure persecution and torture. How many academics have the stomach for that? They might be able to deliver a moving oration, but what happens when a Roman starts flogging them to death?
