Does anyone have any good ideas for venues for getting married for an agnostic and a Catholic?? Definately dont want a registry office, but obviously dont want a church either. Struggling to find a happy compromise that is also special.

Depending on where you are getting married, your choices are limitless...where is the wedding and when?

Parks are good, golf course if one of you is into the sport. Beaches, Arboretums, Japanese gardens often have shelters. I knew a farmer who got married in a cornfield after smashing down enough room for the people attending. Orchards are always nice if the weather is good and the people who own them are usually accommodating. If you live near the mountains, some ski lodges stay open to cater to things like this. If you don't want outside, consider renting a social hall. Some lodges have good deals. Try an internet search for your area under weddings. Inns often have convention quarters. A rural bed and breakfast might be just the thing.

My very non-religious wedding was at a gazebo. Luckily it was a place where, the owners did weddings as 'their thing'- so there was a reception hall on the same property.

You can do your wedding in a park (a lot of counties will rent out the property), in a museum, in a hotel ballroom along with the reception, the possibilities are endless. Check out www.theknot.com for your area, and once you click on City, Venues, you can sort by type.

It all comes down to cultural values and trends. Different countries have different common non-religious venues.

In Pakistan a large number of people prefer non-religious venues like marriage halls, hotel ball rooms, community centers and open gardens meant for such functions.

Here is a list of such venues that i can come up with!

An event hall in a grand hotel
A privately-owned park
A community center that has space for large gatherings
A ferry cruise (the trend's picking up here in Karachi!)

I live in chicago and there are a lot of really nice banquet facilities here that do weddings. Or you can try a hotel. They rent space for parties and weddings. Or if you are planning a summer you can do a garden or beach wedding. Its all about decor...you can some of the most unsuspecting places elegant and wedding worthy....I attended a very nice wedding at a park district assembly hall.

Find a nice banquet hall that you would like to have the reception in, and have the ceremony and reception all in the same place.

That is what I did and it turned out great. With the right decorations you can still have an "aisle" to walk down, you can still have a bridal party and ceremony music and all the bells and whistles, and it is very convenient for your guests because they don't have to find a separate location for the reception.

Good luck!

What about a pretty outdoor location? Many here in Florida get married on the beach, with the Gulf of Mexico in the background.

Perhaps a historical house or attraction in your area? A park or scenic area. A beautiful flower garden or arboretum. An amusement park. In your home or the home of a family member, etc.

Be creative... ☺

My guy and I are both agnostics. Our city has lots of nice parks, hotels, and historic homes/mansions that people frequently use as wedding venues. We're probably going to choose a historic home with a garden.

You don't give any clue as to where you live, so it's hard to answer. Try a park, an old mansion, museums or zoos, banquet halls that will set up a space for you to have the ceremony. If you live near a city, building lobbies and rooftops will often rent themselves out for special events. If you or any of your friends or family have a nice big yard and/or home, consider that.
