At the beginning of the summer I decided to try to loose a few pounds before I went back to school and I did that simply by counting calories. But I've only been getting about 1000 calories a day at the most and I was wondering how healthy that is. I've heard that under 1200 isn't safe because you won't have enough energy but I feel perfectly fine. I don't want to loose any more weight but I'd like to maintain my weight. Basically I just want to know if I should eat the way I've been eating if I don't seem to be having any problems.

Also I'm 13, 5'5", about 110 lbs, and I run cross country if that helps

you people with the calories. Give up with the stupid calories.

It's about the fat grams.

Eat aroundd 15 grams of fat a day total and you will lose weight.

DO NOT worry about the stupid calories. Trust me.

If you're a normally active person, your body does need at least 1200 calories to keep going. You might feel fine now because your body is pulling its energy from any reserves you have. You'll start to lose energy and crash out before you know it. Try adding a healthy snack in the morning and afternoon (the new 100 calorie packs w/chips or crackers are great). You can try a piece of fruit or even better some nuts (almonds, mixed nuts etc). Try to think of things you can stash in your bag for when you're at school. Especially starting back up school you don't want your body to start getting fatigued. You shouldn't have any weight gain by adding a few snacks each day.

If you've been following this regime all summer and havent noticed any loss of hair or other signs of malnutrition, maybe 1000 calories is enough for you. Be sure to include all of the food groups and I'm sure you know not to cut out all fats. You need some fats to maintain your skin and other organs in your body. 1200 calories is more of a guideline. It depends on your height and your body type, plus how active you are. It certainly is better to keep an eye on your weight before it gets to be too big a problem. Congratulations.

You are still growing so you need more. It also depends on how active you are but I would say around 1800 calories to maintain. If you don't want to count calories everyday - you really cant count everyday for the rest of your life anyway! you could just start eating healthy and weighing yourself once a week or every few days. If you start gaining back then look closer at your diet
good luck and congrats on loosing the weight

Okay...I only started two Mondays ago and All I do is walk one hour every morning. I wear a calorie counter monitor to loose weight by the numbers. I have already lost one pant size and 9 pounds. I am a woman and have three kids and this is the method I use when I gain weight.. I am now at a size two and everyone is always amazed that I have had three kids. This is what I do below when I throw on a few extra pounds. It always works..No diet pills, no energy drinks..just me walking and getting the water I need. Of course I watch what I eat and the Lean Cuisine meals are great for that since the calories per box are 180 to 380 per box. Just make sure you eat healthy every three to four hours so your body will perform at its max.

Here it is:

Helpful Tips for weight loss:

1)A good way to loose weight is to use a calorie counter watch

Keep to a 1,200 food intake

Add 1,200 plus 3,500 (equals one pound of fat) ...and that is the total amount of calories you need to burn each day. Its actually really easy once you start watching the numbers and it doesn't seem like work or exercise. Its just a matter of changing the way you think about loosing weight.

I use this method when i gain some pounds. The first time I did this I went from 168 to 127

2) Most people do not get enough water in their system. Water is your body's principal chemical component, comprising, on average, 60 percent of your weight. Every system in your body depends on water. For example, water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.

Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don't have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions. To determine if you are getting enough water use this simple formula.. Take your weight, for example 150 pounds and divide by 2. Take your answer which is 75 lbs and change it to ounces, in this case 75 ounces. That is how many ounces of water you need a day. Your body performs mostly on water. If you make sure you get enough water everyday your body will perform at top notch and your body will no longer have the cravings of junk food. You will have a better performing body system to help you work out and feel better thru out your day.

How many calories you need depends on your height current weight, and how much excercise done, the whole "under 1200 isn't safe" is only a general rule, if you're small or petite or don't do much physical excercise 100 cals will be fine for a while, but if you're tall or excercising you may want to eat some more calories and excercise.

If you eat under 1000 calories a day, you aren't recieiving enough engery for your body to do all of its daily functions, some of which are breathing and making the heart pump blood. The most important functions will continue, such as the ones I mentioned above, but other functions, such as your menstrual cycle, might not. Any calories you do take in will be stored as fat because your body thinks you are starving yourself.
Right now you aren't having any problems, but you could later on. Eat more calories.

1000 calories for a young person is definitely not enough to stay healthy and vibrant. You need about 1800-2000 calories a day for your body to function properly. You also need to work out and drink lots of water and eat lots of fruits and veggies.

well just take in 1200 instead, because you really should not have less than 1200.. just make sure those 1200 calories are coming from healthy stuff.

also, how well did the 1000 calorie intake work?? how long did it take for you to notice results? (i'm trying to lose weight as well) =]

That's not healthy at all, specially when considering that throughout the day you burn some of those caloris and that you're in cross country. You should consume about 2000 calories a day

Eating this way for a short time won't hurt, but you shouldn't try it for any longer. To maintain your weightloss, eat about 1800 calories a day and do an hour of cardio every other day. You'll be fine.
