Here are the techniques that I use:

Breathing meditation - 1) Check posture. 2) Close your eyes and relax. 3) Focus on your breath entering and leaving your body. 4) Count breaths mentally one to four. Repeat. 5) Don't fight a wandering mind, but calmly direct it back to task. 6) Sit for a minute afterwards.

"Mantra" technique (choose a personal "calm" word or phrase that you will repeat in your meditation – I use the nonsectarian "Be One. Be Love. Be Peace.") - 1) and 2) as above in the Breathing meditation. 3) Listen to your breathing and let it relax you with each breath. 4) Once you are relaxed, mentally "hear" your "calm" word or phrase in your mind. Let it repeat in your mind. 5) Don't fight a wandering mind, but calmly direct it back to task. 6) Sit for a minute afterwards.

There are 2 definitions of "meditation"

The Eastern version of meditation is to empty your mind in order to relax.

The Jewish/Christian version of meditation is to fill your mind, choosing a particular thought or phrase to ponder and mull over in your thoughts. This is to benefit personal growth and to assist in decision making or self control. It is also useful as a calming tool.
How to: Look in the book of Psalms or Proverbs. Choose an area of writings on one subject or one short chapter. Close off your thoughts of what is going on around you, and concentrate your thoughts on what you read and reread, consider the meaning, the setting, the implications to your own life, to become inspired.

It lowers your blood pressure, releases anxiety, brings a clearer perspective to your mind, allows you to see yourself and the universe in harmony. As far as how to do it.... many many valid methods. For beginners, the usual process is to relax your body slowly breathing slow and deep. Start with your toes and work yourself up to the top of your head. When you are totally relaxed, turn your attention to your breathing and think of nothing else. Slow breaths in and out, holding particular attention to that 'dip' feeling you have just an instant before your breath is released. That is where the secret is. Do not allow your mind to wander, but observe any images that come into your mind.
