My chorus teacher wants me to do this big huge solo for the new student orientation at my school. I don't know whether I should do it or not though. My mom's bf says I should because I have a great voice, and I need to show it off. My mom says maybe maybe not, because she has my transportation, and she says that she really doesn't want to take time off work, but it is up to me whether I want to do it or not.
My choir teacher wants me to have an answer for her by the end of the day today. I would be so nervous if I did the solo, but it is a chance to make a good impression on the newer portion of my student body. I wouldn't know what song to sing either, so do you think that I should do it, and if so, what song should I sing?
Thank you guys so much, and no smart remarks please. If you can't say something nice, don't say it at all!

My choir director did a similar thing to me when I was a junior.. asking me to do a big solo on an important day in front of the whole school. Of course I was scared to death, but it did it... most of the kids in the school had no idea who i was (i was shy) and NO clue i could sing. I was soo nervous when the song started, but I went for it and belted out the first notes. I saw the kids in the bleachers jaws drop and sit up and take notice. It was the best feeling EVER! They knew who I was after that day.. and I sang for every event I could. \
So before you decide, think about my story. I sure am glad i went for it, I think you will be too. Good Luck to you!

I also think you should use the chance, especially if the chorus teacher has requested you to: she knows that you sing well, and that you are to be relied on.
As far as what to sing- do you prefer something popular or something classical?
I'm no good for pop stuff ( I guess I'm too old fashioned for it...)
but if you're up for some Mozart, try looking at a lovely piece titled "Laudate Dominum". from the Litaniae Lauretanae K.V. 195. Mention it to yur chorus director, and she'll know how to find it. It's in F major, the highest note is a G above the staff, so it should fit you as a 2nd soprano rather well.
( I think there's also a version with violin obbligato accompaniment, if you 're willing to share the spotlight)
Best wishes and have a wonderful time

When I was in high school a couple of years ago I was also in choir, 2nd soprano. I was never given the chance to have a solo, so I say that you go for it. Give it your best and you will not regret a thing. Congrats and good luck.

Wow, I would be nervous, but, you know, if you try your hardest, I am sure that you can do it! I am also a second soprano in advanced chorus in my school! As for a song, Unfaithful by Rihanna is a great song I mastered it!!!!!Best of luck on the solo, and what songs do the rest of you reccomend?

Will you regret it later if you don't sing? If so, go for it!! Your director asked you because she knows you will be fabulous. (Teacher are looking for opportunities to show off their students).
In regards to the song, I make recommendations without knowing your voice or your tastes, but generally I would go with something you know and feel great on, especially if it's in a few weeks.
Good Luck!

I think you should go for it. If you haven't had much performing experience then this would be a good chance to get the feel of performing without a critical audience. I think you should go for it especially if your teacher picked you out of the entire student body. You must have a fabulous voice! Go for it!
Also, just ask your teacher what they would recommend having you sing.

If somebody said you absolutely wouldn't be allowed to do it, how would you feel? Relieved or mad? There is your answer. Sing whatever you really know the best. Good luck.

You really should go for it!!!! I began as a soloist in my high school choir and have now performed in Europe as well as my local opera productions. If you love the music and the feeling of performing - GO FOR IT!!!!
