I know it's short for fundamentalist. But what make an individual a fundie?
I am a Christian. I believe and follow the teachings of the Bible but I do not consider myself a fundamentalist.

Kaliko: I'm just curious. As far as I'm concerned I will answer questions here and what I have to say people can take it or leave it.
I think a fundie is a person who crosses that line between informing people by answering their questions and those who are trying to copell others by less then polite tactics.

Mandy, I consider myself a fundie. I don't take that label as derogatory by the way.
I believe that the bible is the word of God. I believe that acceptance of Christ as Lord and Savior is the ONLY way to get to heaven. That means that 100% of the other ways get you to hell. It's a very intolerant stance. It's biblical. It's not what alot of people think Christians should do. Alot of people think it's OK and even commendable for a Christian to claim to believe the bible (that Christ is the ONLY way), have friends who don't believe (so the Christian understands that their friend is on the way to hell), and then not try to convince them of their need for a savior.
If your "friend" sees your 16 year old daughter about to do something dangerous, but "respects" her right to chose so much that your "friend" does nothing to stop her - would you still call them "friend"?

I've had it reinforced to me here on R&S that there is a difference between a sincere fundamentalist who nevertheless shows love and compassion to others, and a hateful self-righteous fundie who treats everyone else -- including other Christians -- with contempt, derision and condemnation. Their particular interpretation of the Bible is the *only* right one, and the rest of us better fall in line or we're going to be tossed into hell. One gets the distinct impression that they have reserved front-row seats for that event and are looking forward to it with unseemly glee.
They're scary.

If you believe the Earth is 6,000 years old...
If you believe that homosexuality is an "abomination"...
If you believe the rapture is coming soon...
If you believe the only people who can be a good US president are Christians...
If you believe there really was a global flood and Noah's family was the only family on Earth to survive...
If you think we should have school prayer...
If you think the 10 commandments should be displayed in our court houses...
If you are under the impression that our Constitution was based on the 10 commandments...
...and you believe all of this because of the Bible, you might be a fundie.

The true definition of a fundamentalist is exactly what you say. It is someone who believes the bible is the infallible Word of God and that Christ is God in the flesh and that he was born of a virgin , died on a cross for the sins of man, and that he rose again from the dead and ascended to heaven and that the resurrection is a bodily one. Fundamentalist just really means you believe and follow the fundamental teachings of the bible.

Great question Mandy, and from all the conversations we have had I would say it is safe to say you are not a fundie. You are a good-hearted Christian person who only wants good for others and you are willing to put forth effort to help others understand why you believe how you believe, without trying to compel them to believe the same thing. I really respect you as a Christian! Thanks.

I am a fundamentalist. I believe the Word of God. If that makes me narrow minded, I guess I'm narrow minded. Truth is truth. There is 1 way to heaven- through Christ. No other way. I know that makes me seem intolerant, but who cares? Since when is tolerence a great virtue? We should not tolerate sin. Many people who say they are tolerant are very intolerant- they can't tolerate Christians. They are worse than intolerant, they are hypocrites.

Typically applied to a Biblical literalist, particularly those who insist that all other people must be like themselves. Also used to refer to religious militants and fanatics. Generally describes a person who is intolerant, xenophobic, and superstitious. Many seem to be determined to remake the world into their own image.

Whoa, the pink baseball threw me off for a second.
I think of Fundie as someone who doesn't interpret the Bible, but follows it word-for-word.

Someone who blindly follows a religion and pushes their beliefs onto the general public without a second thought and doesn't tolerate the presence of other religions.
Fundies may use propaganda and other means of deception to pursue their goals.
