Matron is already married

maid is not married.

Other than the title they are the exact same thing. It's just what people call them, like calling a woman Ms or Mrs.

I know people who have had both a Matron and a maid of honor. It's your freaking wedding do what you want.

I only learned that this weekend at a friends wedding.

A maid of honor and a matron of honor are the same thing. The title simply reflects whether or not the person is married or not. Since your best friend is not married, she would be considered the maid of honor.

The maid of honor is single and the matron of honor is married. Both of your friends can play a part if you'd like.

The maid or matron of honor is the same thing, the title just depends on if they're married or not. Matron = married, maid = unmarried, but they're basically the same thing (female version of the best man)
hope that helps

If you want them both to have the honor, that is up to you. Don't let them tell you what they want to be - it isn't their wedding. It is perfectly fine to have a maid (non-married) and a matron (married) of honor.

There is ONE position - a Matron of Honour is married, and a Maid of Honour is not married. The others would be bridesmaids.
