I've tried a skinny one and a little wider one so far. I'm inserting it between the window and weatherstrip above the door handle, then sliding it down to where the mechanism are. I've found a spot where if I push on it a little, the door handle moves and the lock bar moves up and down just a bit, but I can't get under it and if I push harder, the stupid slimjim just bends. Am I in the right place or am I doing it all wrong? Thank God I don't make my living as a car thief!!

About causing damage. If I don't get that damn door open soon, there will be far more damage than a faulty lock!

I can't AFFORD a locksmith or I would have done that already.

I'm an overweight, single mother of 2 in a town so small that it doesn't even have a cop, so I'm not the least bit worried about becoming a person of interest.

should be a fairly easy door to open with slim jim. Use the wider one and put a significant bend toward inside of door about 4-5 inches from bottom of slim jim. lift on handle as you get the lock to move. good luck

The first thing is to calm down. Go ahead and call a locksmith. They will be there usually in no more than a 1/2 hour and it will take them only a couple of minutes to get it open.

If you keep goinf with the slim jim, you can damage the weatherstripping, and have you priced that lately? Then you run the chance of getting water inside the door, and that can freeze in winter, and cause the door to freeze shut. Plus it can add to the rust probability, and it can cause problems with the door panel too.

The locksmith is pretty cheap when compared to the other options. Go ahead and call one, then just grab a coke or pepsi and sit back and wait till they get there.

As for the slim jim, don't let the cops see you with it, or you will become a "person of interest."

Use a coat hanger bent in the shape of a hook pointing up. Explorers of this vintage are one of the easiest vehicle to break into. Just insert it where you have the slim jim and use the hook end that's pointing up to push the lock button up from underneath. You just have to drop the hook down until you can move it towards the inside of the vehicle then bring it up and push the button up.

Very easy trust me you're making it way too hard with that slim jim. I've done a ton of these and can have one open in under 10 seconds it's that easy.

Slim Jims do not work on all cars. They have been known to cause damage.
