You don't need a DL, just proof of age. There are several ways you can do that such as a state ID or passport. Most states won't issue you a state ID if you alredy have a DL, however.

And who says that you're going to drink it in the car anyway?

You don't need a "driver's license" per se - however, you DO need some form of recognized identification.

A driver's license (or other state identification card) typically shows your date of birth - so this makes it easier to figure out if you're of legal age to purchase alcohol in your state.

A better question might be - if you're not allowed to drink-and-drive (this law actually varies from state to state, I believe that in some states it simply says that you're not allowed to drive while drunk / intoxicated - but you can still DRINK) -- then how come there are parking lots at bars? ...or why are there drive-thru liquor stores?

In England that would not work as we do not have photo I D on our drivers licence " yet " so we have a system where you can take your passport and get a young persons I D card complete with mug shot but also in England the age limit for buying booze is 18 years of age but that may change quite soon

You don't need a driver's license. You need a form of government-issued identification (though some states require state-issued ID). It's just needed to confirm your age.

Because they need to check your age and your date of birth (DOB) is most commonly found on your drivers license rather than your credit card or something like that.

Your smart. So the solution is to give it to people that cant drive like, lets say, people 16 years and younger.

You need a state issued ID, most of these are DL's but some are just ID's. that prove that your 21 or older. this doesn't mean that you can drink and drive. This just proves that your old enough to buy alcohol.

To prove your age. It is a picture ID issued by the Govt.
You can buy alcohol, as long as you're 21 and can prove it to the satisfaction of the store clerk.

You don't necessarily need a driver's licence just a form of ID. Your passport is also acceptable.

Preferably something with your photo and your date of birth...but I guess you already knew that!!!!!!

It is ID - which proves your date of birth and a picture.
Any ID with your picture and date of birth is acceptable not your driving licence.

Apparently, not everyone does. No one ever asks for my DL when I buy. I guess being 48 y.o. has some advantages...
