Actually, to prevent a person from going into shock after a traumatic event, such as a car crash. EMTs do it all the time. It is a common practice in the medical field. Other than that, I can't think of anything except that one time I told Mary Jane Rottencrotch that I would call her sometime, but I had to go just then.

Perhaps if a person is on the verge of death and only semi coherent, then tell them they are going to be saved from whatever.
In the movies, this would be like having a person being trapped by the attackers and holding out hope they will be saved at the last moment.
In real life terms, if they are christian, then being saved would make them feel relaxed. If they are atheists with a sense of humor, you might send them off with a chuckle.
