If you are seeking groups that will work with youngsters that age-Big Brother/Big Sister, United Way and others may be of assistance, and there are groups that will work with youngsters of this age group if there is a specific social or health need.

If you are seeking places for a 16 year old to volunteer, there are several places for students of this age group that I could suggest:
1) If you have a local Kiwanis club, which is the world's largest community service organization devoted primarily to the needs of youngsters, you may want to work with them to help form a KEY Club Kiwanis-Educates-Youth) if you are in high school These are the world's largest community service groups for students in the different levels of school. It also enables a student to network with community leaders.

Other suggestions:

A teen can raise money in some way for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, which holds its Annual Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon on Labor Day weekend, and if enough money is raised, depending on location, that student may be able to raise money in the next few weeks and end up on local TV if you raise enough in some way.
That web site you will have to look up for yourself.

The March of Dimes has a teen group called Chain Reaction. http://www.marchofdimes.com/aboutus/864_1556.asp

You may want to see if your local library has reading programs for younger children--preschool or kindergarten-where, maybe on the weekend, you could help read to the students. And, if they do not have a program, you may want to work with your local head librarian so you and possibly friends or fellow students could read to these students after school hours, or on week-ends.

Your best bet is working with a group where you can have adults working with you for two reasons--first, it will be good to learn from these role models. Second, when it comes to applying for a job, if these adults know who you are and can help you because they see how dedicated you are, you may have a better chance finding a job during high school, or getting a letter of recommendation that can help you with your college admission applications.

I hope this helps

I would recommend that you contact your local volunteer center. They can provide all sorts of one-time or short-term volunteer activities that match your interest and meet real community needs as well. Most of them have youth programs and family volunteer programs. I've volunteered alongside groups with children as young as 5 at one of the local food banks.

Check out your local volunteer center through the following links:

The other option is to try the local chapter of the United Way. They also specialize in volunteer placement:

Good luck!

Girl Scouts usually has a lot of service and volunteer opportunities. My 14 year old helped plan and run a week long camp, for example.

So check with your local Council about opportunities. You don't even have to join a troop, just register as an independent (called a Juliette).
