You can answer if your kid or someone in your family or a best friend had it done. My daughter needs it for her upper jaw. Please include how much pain was involved and if you had to only eat certain foods etc. Also, how did you keep the thing clean?

I will do what she needs, but I want to make sure she is comfortable. She is almost 7 and needs it done soon.

There isn't too much pain involved...just soreness after the appliance is opened. She shouldn't eat sticky foods (caramel, taffy) or chew gum as they can get stuck between the roof of her mouth and the RPE. Another thing to avoid is popcorn. Regardless of all of this, she should get the RPE. It helps get the orthodontic job done faster! It sometimes helps straighten the teeth on its own because it makes the palate bigger - allowing more space for the teeth.

Both of my daughters had RPE. Both experienced only minimal discomfort, usually directly after the expansions. Initially the tongue would get caught on it and there was some lisping of speech, but that went away as they adjusted to it in their mouth. Biting into apples and other fruits was out, although they could cut them into smaller pieces to eat. They would brush it to get it clean. All in all, no big deal and it prepared their mouths for the braces they needed.

I have it right now and it's no fun.. it never hurt, just some discomfort after you turn the key. Eating was impossible the first week because everything would get caught in it and nothing would actually go down my throat. I have to rinse my mouth with water more than 4x after each meal to get all the food out. I've had mine for over a month and I still cant talk right :[
