I would like to start learning before I buy any expensive books or programs.

What would be a good way to get started?

go to your local library and see if they have a CD set that you can check out. That's what I did. Our library had a 5 disc beginner set and a 5 disc advanced set.

what I did when I started learning English... watch Spanish TV shows, movies and everything at the beginning try to watch them with subtitles in your language and then change to subtitles in Spanish so that as well as pronouncing you can get a feeling for the spelling and the way sentences are constructed. After that you can buy books and stuff, but I think this is a good way to start. Also listen to music in Spanish and and read the lyrics and stuff like that.

Pick up a Spanish-English dictionary and read it, then copy the words from a-z. Copy all the A's and hand write them on study cards, then move on to the B's and so on...

Another even more effective approach would be to look up a list of verbs in Spanish on the Internet and print it out, then using your Spanish-English dictionary translate the verbs. Once done, move onto nouns, then adjectives, and so on. That is the way I learned English and I'm in the process of learning Japanese!!! It Works!!!
Good luck!!

Stowaway on a Spanish freighter. By the time you reach Spain, you'll know every disgusting, dirty Spanish word possible and will therefore blend in well LOL

Find some friends for yourself who's first language is Spanish.

The longer you hang around with them, the more will rub off.
